Extension to Offer Gardening
Workshop in May

Michele Hebert – Land Resources Agent with the Tanana District is planning to conduct a gardening workshop in Delta on Thursday, May 5th.
She will be offering an afternoon class from 1:00 – 4:30 and repeat an abbreviated version later that evening from 5:30-8:30. Michele is looking for areas of interest so please consider what topics you might wish to have her address. Some suggestions are: organic gardening, pest
control, composting, raised beds, landscape plants – just to name a few.

It would help with the planning if folks would contact the CES office and choose one or two of the mentioned topics or something else that
might be of interest. There will be a $10 registration fee to cover costs of this workshop.

Activity Day:
Following lunch on March 4th, we will have a quarterly activity day with a pep assembly, Principal’s Award of Excellence, and activities coordinated by the Fort Greely School student council. Students will be asked to sign up for their preferred activity during lunch on Thursday, March 3rd.

Parent/Teacher Conferences:
We are requesting parents to call ahead to schedule conference times at your convenience. All conferences will be held in the school’s gym, allowing the opportunity to visit with all of your child’s teachers in one location. A copy of your child’s report card will be available at conferences. The schedule for spring Parent/Teacher Conferences is as follows:

Fort Greely School Intramurals:
Effective February 19th, Fort Greely School students will be able to participate in an intramural league of their very own. YS Director Mary Lester and Delta/Greely School District Community Schools Coordinator Jody Zollman will open the Delta High School gym to students on Saturdays from 1:00 pm. – 3:00 p.m. We will begin with a 3-on-3-basketball tournament; look forward to other indoor sports such as floor hockey, soccer, and dodge ball in the near future.

Boys Wrestling Club:
The Boys Wrestling Club kicked off practice on Monday, February 28th. Due to the lateness of the season, we anticipate only a couple of matches between area schools, with a schedule forthcoming. Students wishing to participate must have a current physical and permission form submitted to the office.

Fort Greely School Idol:
Tryouts for the “second season” of our famous Fort Greely School Idol will occur this week. The talent show will take place during the afternoon of Friday, April 8, starting at 1:00 p.m.. Parents are invited!

Standards Based Assessments (SBA’s):
Probably the most important event of our school year will occur during the first week of April when we administer the newly developed Standards Based Assessments (SBA’s) to all students in grades 6 though 8. Fort Greely School teachers have been implementing, and will continue to implement, different strategies to best prepare our students for the assessments. Parents interested in more information on the upcoming SBA’s can visit the Alaska Department of Education assessment  website  General test information, item samplers, teacher resources, test coordinator resources, and soon to come, parent/student resources will be available at this site. I encourage every parent to visit this site to gain a better understanding of our
new assessment system. I would also encourage every parent to ensure their child’s attendance during the April 5th – 7th administration. Many important funding, planning, and program decisions are made based on the results of the SBA’s.

Spring Break:
Spring break for all DGSD schools will be from Monday, March 21st through Friday, March 25th. Please be aware that there is no school for students on Thursday, March 17th or Friday, March 18th for Parent/Teacher Conferences.

Parent Advisory Committee Meeting (PAC):
The purpose of the PAC is to offer a forum for open communication between Ft. Greely School parents and the school administration. Topics of discussion for each meeting will vary dependent on participants. All meetings will have an agenda to discuss current, applicable topics, as well as to review old topics as required. The next PAC meetings will be held Wednesday, March 30th at 7:00 p.m. in the school’s Conference Center.

If I can be of assistance to you at any time, please feel free to contact me through the means listed above.

Sincerely,

Gamblers Understand the Odds

Do you gamble?  Play Texas Hold'em poker, casino games, or lotteries?  Then understanding your odds of winning is part of the challenge.

Are you planning on living a long and healthy life?  A life free of aches and pains?  A life full of excitement and adventure?  Great, then understanding the odds of developing diabetes will surely cause you to take immediate action.

It is estimated that one in three Americans born in the year 2000 will develop diabetes.  Those are terrifying odds.

Already, more than 18 million Americans live with diabetes and that number is growing.  What is even more alarming is the fact that 5 million people don't even know they have diabetes.

A new buzz in the medical community calls it- Pre-Diabetes.  Today, roughly 41 million Americans have pre-diabetes which left undetected and untreated, progresses into full-blown diabetes.

The challenge with pre-diabetes is the fact that the condition doesn't like to reveal itself with noticeable symptoms.  Because there are few, if any symptoms, most people will not bother having screening tests performed.  With pre-diabetes, noticeable symptoms like frequent thirst and urination may not occur until the disease has progressed and is already causing considerable damage to your body.  Most Type 2 diabetics don't have symptoms because the onset of diabetes is so slow.

Don't gamble with your health.  The odds of developing diabetes are stacked against you.

The goal with identifying pre-diabetes is to prevent the onset of diabetes from ever happening.

Your physician can determine if you have pre-diabetes with two common tests.  The fasting plasma glucose test (FPG) and the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).  Both require an overnight fast.

The good news is that you can greatly improve your odds and likely prevent diabetes with early detection and proper care.

Don't wait 'til it hurts.  Ask your doctor about diabetes and have your blood sugar checked several times a year.

Will They Recognize You?

Imagine how it feels to look younger, feel younger, and act younger!  Now, think about how others see you.  Are you ready to make a lasting impression on your friends and family?  Great!

Taking charge of your diabetes through exercise can give you a younger look and feel not to mention …… a younger attitude!

As you read this message, remember this:  You don’t pay the price to improve your health, you reap the benefits of being healthy!

Treatment of diabetes has gone through dramatic changes in the past two decades. Previously, exercise was often overlooked as a “cornerstone” in its treatment as it was difficult to maintain blood sugar levels with the additional variability introduced by physical activity, especially for individuals with type 1 diabetes.

However, with blood glucose meters now being readily available and affordable, exercise can be done safely and without fear of severely upsetting an often delicate glucose balance.

The usual health benefits of exercise apply to individuals with diabetes as well, perhaps even more than normal.

Much of what we attribute to the aging process really results from disuse (for example, muscle atrophy, or loss of flexibility in joints). Diabetes, especially when blood sugars are poorly controlled, accelerates the normal aging process, as well as certain disease processes such as heart disease.

Thus, regular exercise can help slow aging and reduce long term complications associated with poor blood sugar control and diabetes.

These diabetes-related benefits can not be understated! Not only can you enjoy your favorite physical activity, but also you can help your diabetes and health too. In fact, regular exercise is the most important activity you can do to slow the aging process, manage your blood sugars, and reduce your risk of diabetic complications.

Ask your doctor about diabetes and have your blood sugar checked several times a year.

Alaska State Parks recognizes Citizen Advisory Board members

Alaska State Parks has appointed David Payer and Scott Rupp as the newest members of the Alaska State Parks Citizen Advisory Board for the Northern Area.
• David Payer is a Wildlife Ecologist employed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service and is an experienced outdoorsman. He has served on the Tanana Valley State Forest Citizen’s Advisory Committee and has volunteered with trail maintenance for borough and state projects. David is an avid canoeist, skier and hiker, interested in representing paddle sport opportunities and trail use.
• Scott Rupp is a Forest Ecologist at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, who currently serves as President of the Two Rivers Dog Mushers Association. Scott is an avid dog musher, skijorer, and hiker who advocates providing a diversity of recreational opportunities on public lands.

David and Scott join the 2004 appointees, Tom Paragi, Joe Letarte, Tom Bachert, and Paul Barrett. The board is chaired by Michael Nuckols (member from Delta) and includes other incumbents Julie Maier and Steve Reidsma. All members continue to dedicate their time and energy to help enhance the recreation opportunities for their community.

Each member’s term is three years, with an option to renew. Board members are recruited from the community at large to represent the various recreational, historical, and cultural resource interests in a balanced manner.

Members completing their terms in 2004:
- Ken Severin, served 1995 – 2004
- Todd Boyce, served 1996 – 2004
- Lowell North, served 1996 - 2004
- Christine Storey, served 1996 – 2004
- Brad Snow, served 1998 – 2004
- the late Nan MacGregor-Scott, 1998 - 2004.

We thank these past members for generously volunteering their time and for their dedication to public service.

Alaska State Parks is currently seeking two or three new board members. Though specific “seats” are not assigned, some of the interests sought for new board members include snowmobiling, off-road vehicle use, motor home camping, horse riding, handicap park use, and commercial park use. We encourage anyone interested to apply.

The Citizen Advisory Board members fulfill an important role of communication between Alaska State Parks and the community it serves. Most recently, the board has considered issues such as the revised management plan for Chena River State Recreation Area, widening of the Chena Hot Springs Winter Trail, relocating the park entrance in Fairbanks when the University Avenue widening project occurs, and efforts to save Rika’s Roadhouse from the Tanana River bank erosion. Board meetings are generally held on the second Wednesday of each month, September through May, at the Alaska Department of Natural Resources in Fairbanks. The next board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 13. The board welcomes the public to attend their monthly meetings.

For more information or a board application packet contact 451-2695.

Looking for Photo Opportunities

If you see any type of OWL (or any other neat
creature) hanging around your home or an area for a length of time I'd appreciate a call at 895-4452 EXT 22 (work) or 895-4298 (Home)

If I get a decent shot of the animal or bird as a result of a tip from you I will make YOU a nice 8 X10 glossy photo. You can call me at any time of the day. I can't always leave my job for these opportunities, but if I can, I'll be there! If these occasions happen in the evenings. ...I'll be there!

Fort Greely/Delta Junction Red Cross Disaster Training

The Fort Greely/ Delta Junction community is currently in the process of forming a group of volunteers who will be trained by the American Red Cross to provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

Currently in the event of a disaster our community would need to seek relief from the Red Cross Chapter located in Fairbanks. In an emergency situation this could delay the relief process by several hours. Our goal as a community is to form our own group of trained local volunteers, standup an emergency shelter and have supplies on hand. Our community will benefit by having our own emergency shelter and should a disaster arise our local volunteers would be able to respond immediately.

Volunteers will be required to complete 2 self-taught courses and 1 full day course taught by a Red Cross instructor. The courses are outlined below:

1. Introduction to Disasters – Video and workbook – approximate time to complete is 3 to 4 hours. This video-based course will introduce you to disasters, the community response, and the role of Red Cross Disaster Services.

2. Mass Care: An Overview – Video and workbook – approximate time to
complete is 3 to 4 hours. This course focuses on the activities of the Mass Care function. Participants will learn about the skills and abilities needed by Mass Care workers.

3. Shelter Operations & Shelter Simulation Exercise – Instructor taught - approximate course length is 8 hours (day long workshop). This course is designed to prepare individuals to effectively and sensitively manage shelter operations as a team in order to meet the needs of people displaced as a result of disaster. The participants are then given the opportunity to practice the knowledge and skills needs to run a successful shelter operation.

We currently have 10 new volunteers that are in the process of taking the 1st and 2nd courses and another 6 who have previously completed the 1st and 2nd course. Once all interested individuals have completed the two self-directed courses we will arrange one Saturday session to complete the Shelter Operations course and the Shelter Simulation Exercise.

Please contact Lisa Lewis at the Fort Greely Chapel (873-2476) if you would like to be put on the volunteer list or would like more information.

The above is to be held as a requirement of the LEPC any interested party please contact Lisa above or email myself Brian@wirelessdelta.com or

News Release/Health Story/Diabetes Awareness Article Series

"Check Engine" Warning Light

Your car has an early detection system and so does your body.  Take 3 minutes to read this article and learn how you can save yourself a life time of aches, pains, and costly medical bills.

Have you ever had the "Check Engine" warning light come on in your car?  Most newer cars have a system that monitors the performance of your car.  If something is not working properly, the "Check Engine" light usually comes on.

The good news is that this "pre-warning" system can help you avoid costly damage, which may be occurring with your vehicle, by detecting small problems before they become big problems.  However, the only way to be certain is to have your car inspected by an expert mechanic when the "Check Engine" light comes on.

Did you know that your body has a "pre-warning" system?

With many diseases, your body will start producing symptoms such as aches, pains, fatigue, frequent thirst, and so on.  These symptoms are your body's "Check Engine" light, warning you about problems.

However, with diabetes, pre-warning signs don't always show up so easily.  The medical community is calling it:  "Pre-Diabetes".

Don't wait for your "Check Engine" light to come on.  Have your blood tested.  Call your doctor today and make the appointment.
