Interior's fire season off to a slow start
After two record-setting fire years, Alaska's 2006 fire season is off to a slow start, especially in the Interior.
"We're well below normal as far as fire activity goes," said Maggie Rogers, spokesperson for the Alaska Fire Service in Fairbanks.
Through Friday, a total of 135 fires had been reported throughout the state, and only 32 of those were in the Fairbanks and Delta areas. The total acreage burned so far is 2,516, which is well below the 10-year average of 84,000 acres by June 1, said Rogers.
