Photo of the day - August 12

I took this picture of a Bluet Damselfly (Enallagma sp.) at Lake George recently. Damselflies are aquatic insects, generally found at or near fresh water. Dragonflies and damselflies are found in every region except Antarctica. Both the adults and larvae are predatory, but they are completely harmless to humans. The larvae are aquatic and will hunt and eat insects and animals up to their own size (including small vertebrates like tadpoles and fish fry). The adults are aerial hunters with acute eyesight, and are often difficult to catch. This information was gathered from Dragonflies of Alaska website and from the Tree of Life web project (Odonata) at. Photo Courtesy of Ellen Clark.
