Alaskans shopping from home for Alaskan Holiday Gifts
The Internet is often considered the enemy of local businesses, particularly small businesses. Alaskans now are able to search the Internet for Alaskan holiday gifts exclusively from fellow Alaskans. AlaskaGoogle.com is a custom search engine created with Google Co-Op. The service is in it's beta release from the search giant Google.com
AlaskaGoogle.com developer Robert Cortez says about the project, "I personally preview every site included in AlaskaGoogle.com which currently searches 2,740 quality Alaskan websites". One of the requirements for inclusion, as published on the website, is that all businesses or organizations must have an Alaskan address to be included. AlaskaGoogle.com works on the same principles as Google.com. There are no fees for sites to submit, to be included, or for better placement in the search results. Search returns are based on the relevancy of the website to the search terms input by the site user. The search results can be further refined by selecting from sixteen different labels including "Business/Industry" or "Made In Alaska" AlaskaGoogle.com is supported by advertising, primarily from Google's Adwords program which delivers relevant text ads based on the search terms. No annoying flashing banners or popups. Using the same simple successful model as Google.com, AlaskaGoogle.com is light on graphics to provide fast results even on the slowest connections. In addition to the personal screening of sites, search results and advertising are further screened for objectionable material by Google's "Safe Search" technology.
Cortez says about AlaskaGoogle.com, "The focus of this project has been to provide Alaskans with a tool to find Alaskan information, products and services from quality Alaskan sources. It's still very much a work in progress. I'm adding and refining the site everyday with unique quality Alaskan websites."
Robert Cortez is a 30 year Alaskan resident. He has been a businessman and entrepreneur working as an independent Internet consultant and project manager since 1998.
