Division of Elections Performing List Maintenance on Voter Registration Records

(December 3, 2007, Anchorage, Alaska) - Along with holiday cards and catalogs, voters should check their mail boxes for notices from the Division of Elections. The Division is updating the State's voter registration list by sending address confirmation notices to each person who registered to vote before January 1, 2004 and who has not voted, signed a state petition, or had contact with the Division since January 1, 2004.

If the Division receives the notice back as “undeliverable” the voter will be sent a second notice to the voter's last known address with a request for it to be forwarded to any new address. If a registered voter does not respond to the second notice by March 3, 2008, the voter’s registration record will be inactivated. Voter records that are placed in the inactive status will not appear on the precinct register during elections and the voter will be required to vote a questioned ballot.

The Division of Elections is required to perform list maintenance on a yearly basis to maintain compliance with State and Federal law. The Division relies upon the cooperation of voters in responding to the notices to help maintain the accuracy of the State's voter registration records.
"It is important for people to respond to the notices so the State can maintain an accurate list," said Whitney Brewster, Director of the Division of Elections. "There are numerous cases where voters move either out of State or elsewhere in Alaska and simply fail to notify the Division. If you receive a notice addressed to a voter that is no longer at the address, please mark “Return to Sender” and send the notice back to the Division of Elections. This will trigger the second notice that, if not responded to, will allow the Division to inactivate the voter’s record.”

To find out voter status, please contact the Division of Elections at:

Region II office in Anchorage at 522-8683
Region III office in Fairbanks at 451-2835
