Photo of the day - June 30

Steve Thomas posted a really nice photo of the midnight sun taken from Donnelly Dome on the June 21 summer solstice. The same day, I was at Eagle Summit about 110 miles north of Fairbanks along the Steese Highway. Eagle Summit is the southern most point on the road system where you can watch the sun stay above the horizon on the summer solstice. On the solstice, the sun reaches its lowest point on the horizon at 1:48 a.m. This is a picture I took of the sun at its lowest point. The sun stayed at this height for about forty-five minutes and then started its upward arch into the sky again as seen in the second picture.
