Military Personnel and Overseas Citizens May Request Special Advance Absentee Ballot

The Division of Elections encourages Alaska residents serving in the military stationed outside of Alaska, and overseas citizens to consider immediately applying for a special advance absentee ballot for the November 7, 2006 General Election. Special advance absentee ballots are available now, upon request, and only until October 6. Concern about potential mail delivery delays beyond the control of the military and the Division is prompting the Alaska Division of Elections to remind military and overseas voters of this option.

“We are making every effort to ensure that our military personnel are able to cast their vote in a timely manner,” said Whitney Brewster, Director of the Division of Elections. “These special advance absentee ballots are their best option.”

A voter must specifically request the ballot via an application by checking Box 15 on the absentee ballot application. The application is on the Division’s web site .

Submit your completed special advance absentee ballot by:
1. Mail: Division of Elections Absentee Voting Office, 619 E. Ship Creek Ave., Ste. 329, Anchorage, AK 99501-1677.
2. Fax: You may fax your completed application to the Absentee Voting Office at 907-677-9943.
3. In Person: You may drop off your completed application at any Division of Elections office if you are being deployed outside of Alaska.

Ballots must be postmarked no later than November 7 to be counted. November 22 is the deadline for the Division to receive by-mail ballots from overseas and military addresses. If you have questions about voting absentee, contact the Absentee Voting Office at (907) 375-6400 or via email .

The Carefree Gourmet - by Joyce McCombs - Apples

I believe one of the reasons I was put on this earth was to appreciate the people who have green thumbs. My own efforts at gardening are notoriously pathetic and I won’t bore you with the great pea and cabbage disaster of 1988. Suffice to say the moose got their vitamins, and I got a lesson in humility I’ll never forget. I also threw a tantrum and cussed some, but that’s another story.

Since then I have become a sort of Zen gardener, not one who rakes gravel and meditates on the intricate patterns, but one with a rich fantasy life filled with visions of brilliant tomatoes, robust zucchini and carrots that are firm and sweet. I imagine bushel baskets filled with squash and onions and potatoes, all lined up on my porch, waiting to be canned or frozen or served for supper to a gang of ravenous farm hands. The fact I don’t can or freeze anything is a small detail I conveniently ignore and I can’t remember the last time a single farm hand stopped by for supper, let alone a whole gang.

We invite you to visit our Carefree Gourmet pages.

Rainbow trout are being stocked in one of the Fort Greely Lakes. Normally Fish and Game receives fish to stock in lakes earlier in the summer, but when the state hatchery at Fort Richardson lost its warm water it pushes back the timing of when fish are stocked. This is an issue hopefully resolved when the new hatchery in Fairbanks is constructed. Photo Courtesy Fronty Parker

Chinook by George M Hosier II - Of Moose and Men

I think that moose should receive the “World’s Ugliest Thing” award. The only things that might even have a chance of being a runner up are walruses; dust mites; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and my great-aunt Hilda. However, with its gangly legs, bristly proboscis, prehensile lips, blubbery nostrils and close-set beady eyes, the classic ugliness of your average moose can hold its own against all comers.

One would think that the first time a moose caught a glimpse of its reflection in a pond it would immediately expire from embarrassment, but I don’t suppose they have enough of a brain to process the whole concept of self-recognition. If they have any thoughts on the matter at all, moose probably assume their reflection is a sea monster of some sort. Maybe that’s why you typically find them sloshing around in water--they’re trying to stomp the hideous thing they saw peering up at them from just under the surface of their breakfast bowl.

To read the entire article, we invite you to our Chinook pages.

Health Alert - Bagged Spinach Recall

A nationwide recall of bagged spinach is in effect. The FDA advises consumers to immediately discard all brands of bagged spinach as they could be contaminated with E COLI bacteria, which cannot be washed away. Anyone who has gotten sick after eating bagged spinach should contact a doctor. The outbreak of E COLI related illness continues to spread and has caused one death. The bacteria can cause low-grade fever, vomiting and diarrhea, often with bloody stool, the FDA said. More information.

Hosting Missiles Worth the Risk?

The first European based missile interceptor site, a complement to the already active Fort Greely and Vandenberg AFB sites, could be in Poland if officials there feel a bilateral security agreement and help with air defense are enough incentive to outweigh the risk of becoming a potential target. Fort Greely School September newsletter

Dear Fort Greely School Parent,

The Fort Greely School parent newsletter is a tool I use to best communicate school events and happenings to our parents. This newsletter will cover events for the end of September into October. You should expect to receive another newsletter from me in approximately one month’s time. A copy of this letter is furnished to the Delta News Web, the Delta Wind, the IGA reader board, the school district website calendar, and to the Public Information Officer on Fort Greely.

Student Identification Cards (ID): Every Fort Greely School student was issued an ID card with a copy of their lunch balance barcode and library barcode. It has taken us some time and resources to make quality ID’s so we are asking for your support in ensuring your student carries their ID at all times. Those students who participate in the hot lunch program will be asked to present them to be scanned daily for accounting purposes. Students who forget their card will move to the back of the lunch line as a reminder that they need to carry their ID. Again, we ask for your support in making sure your student carries his or her ID at all times.

Demographic Form and Lunch Balance Letter: Included with this newsletter is a copy of your current demographic information form and a copy of your child’s lunch transaction balance. Please complete the demographic information form and return to our office as soon as possible. Any student with more than a five dollar deficit will not be able to charge a lunch until their deficit has been paid, effective Monday, September 18th. Students who have not cleared their deficit can either pay for lunches individually, or will be provided a snack, but again will not be able to charge a lunch.

Fort Greely School Basketball: Basketball season is upon us! The boys’ teams coaches this year will be Mr. Dave Becker and Mr. Sean Hogue, and the girls’ teams coach will be Ms. Megan Murphy. Interested students have been invited to a team meeting this week and will have reviewed expectations for participation in the boys’ and girls’ program. Practice starts on Monday, September 18th; students wishing to participate must first a have a current school physical and have paid the $75 sports participation fee. Students on free and reduced lunches can have the fee waived. Please contact me for more information on the waiver. A copy of the current basketball games will be posted on the DNW calendar.

Picture Day: Picture Day, hosted by LifeTouch Photography, will be on Tuesday, October 2nd. Package pricing information should be available at our front office within the next week. Students are encouraged to be in school that day looking their best. There will be a picture day retake a later date to be advertised.

Fall Band and Choir Concert: The Fort Greely School Band and Choir are preparing for their first concert to be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 17th. We are fortunate to have very large sections of band and choir, and the students are sounding wonderful! This is a great opportunity for all parents to come and see Fort Greely Students performing at their best. There will be a dessert reception following the concert for parents and students in the gym lobby.

If you ever have any questions regarding Fort Greely School Events, please feel free to contact me directly.

Sincerely,
Brian J. Schaffer
Principal, Fort Greely School

Patriot Day

In the United States, Patriot Day occurs on September 11 of each year, designated in memory of those who died in the September 11, 2001 attacks. However, the name does not seem to have caught on in the American vernacular; most people still refer to the day as "September 11th", "9/11", or some variation thereof.

U.S. House Joint Resolution 71 was approved by a vote of 407-0 on October 25, 2001. It requested that the President designate September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day." President George W. Bush signed the resolution into law on December 18, 2001 (as Public Law 107-89). It is a discretionary day of remembrance.

Initially, the day was called the National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims Of the Terrorist Attacks.

On September 4, 2002, President Bush used his authority created by the resolution and proclaimed September 11, 2002 as Patriot Day. He has continued to make similar declarations every year since.

On this day, the President directs that the flag of the United States be flown at half-staff and displayed from individual American homes, at the White House, and on all U.S. government buildings and establishments, home and abroad. The President also asks Americans to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 A.M. (Eastern Daylight Time) marking the first plane crash on Sept. 11, 2001.

Some countries have also shared Patriot Day with the U.S. as well. For example, in Canada, the prime minister orders flags on the Peace Tower (in Ottawa on Parliament Hill) and on all Canadian diplomatic missions in the U.S be flown at half-staff.

Some greeting card companies have released Patriot Day cards, causing controversy among some. However, many companies, such as Hallmark, do not offer cards specifically for Patriot Day.

Despite the law's passage and President Bush's proclamation, the effort to make Sept. 11 a national holiday has been rejected by many who view the effort as an act of jingoism and "handing the emotional victory over to the terrorists." Specifically, many object to the naming of the day as 'Patriot Day,' as the day is intended as a memorial to the victims of a terrorist attack and arguably has nothing to do with patriotism or patriots.

Join Chamber for the Halloween Bash!

Fall is in the air and with the changing of colors come thoughts of pumpkins. The Chamber is hosting a Halloween Bash this year on October 21. So mark your calendar and get your little goblins, witches, pirates and clowns ready for a BOO of a good time. There will be games, crafts, costume contest, pumpkin carving contest and treats (no tricks) for kids and adults alike. We’ll even do the “monster mash” at the Halloween dance. There will be just enough “spook” and a lot of fun at this family event. Look for more details as the event gets closer and if you would like to help call Dawn at 895-5068

Volunteers Needed to Light up the Visitor Information Center!

Well, we the holiday season is just around the corner…and that means that we need to start thinking about putting Christmas lights on the Visitor Information Center. It is always nicer to decorate outside when it is 50 degrees above zero instead of 50 degrees below. So, Dawn (the Special Events Coordinator at the Delta Chamber of Commerce) is looking for some volunteers to help put lights up in mid-September.

She has access to a man-lift from AIRPORT Equipment Rentals, now she just needs helpers. Volunteers Needed: 1 person that can run the lift and 1 or 2 people to help hang the lights. Everyone is welcome. A tentative decorating time is September 14 at 4:45 p.m. Please call and let the Delta Chamber of Commerce know if you would like to help. If you are interested then give Dawn a call at 895-5068.
