Don’t Get Hit By The Seminar Pitch

Press Release from Brenda Smith/PR/Communications Manager

BBB Warns Consumers About Free Conference

The BBB is advising consumers in Alaska about a FREE Conference sponsored by a company with over 420 complaints with their local BBB in the past 36 months and government actions pending against them in five states. StoresOnline, Inc., will be holding conferences in Anchorage on Wednesday, October 31, Thursday, November 1, and Friday November 2 at the Marriott and Saturday, November 3, at the Coast International Inn. Consumers receive a VIP invitation for the conference in the mail offering a free meal and a gift claiming to be valued at $120. Following the 90-minute conference, attendees are urged to sign up for a one-day workshop which requires a fee. This company also does business under the following names: Galaxy Mall Inc., Internet Marketing Conference, and Imergent Inc

Consumers who plan to attend any free seminars or workshops should be aware that in most cases the presenters will promote products and services that are for sale. Products sold at these seminars could include self improvement, investment education materials, home based businesses and marketing plans. Individuals interested in home based or internet businesses need to consider all aspects and costs of starting and operating a business. Promoters use high-pressure sales pitches that require consumers to buy now or risk missing the opportunity. Consumers must then pay up to thousands of dollars for information that is available elsewhere for little or no money.

Here are some red flags that may signal a questionable seminar promoter:

  • The offer is advertised as being time sensitive.
  • The promoters hype the program but provide little detail.
  • The representatives are reluctant to answer questions and they give evasive answers.
  • Local business people or experts are not endorsing the program.
  • Little time is given to read a lengthy contract.
  • Promoters will not provide the number of people participating in the program who have achieved the program’s claims.
  • Promoters are unwilling to provide earning claims in writing.
  • Promoters claim that laws regulating the sales of business opportunities do not apply to them.

Taking the time to research a company prior to making a purchase cannot only help avoid frustration, but can also help to avoid being the victim of a scam. Most legitimate seminar businesses are willing to provide descriptions of their programs before a purchase is made. Ask to see data on the percent of program participants who actually achieve the promoter’s claims. Read all contracts carefully before signing anything and get all promises or claims in writing.

Delta Hockey Association News

News from the Delta-Greely Skating Association

The 4th Annual Dinner/Auction Gala is set for Saturday, November 17th, 2007 at the Moose Lodge on Jack Warren Road. We have a lot of wonderful gift items already for the auction and the food includes pig. Even though the theme is Hawaiian, you won’t see the whole pig. Tickets at $25.00 per plate will be available at Granite View Sports on October 31st, 2007. Only 100 tickets will be available so if you are interested in a very entertaining and fun evening, be sure to get your seats. We promise you a large variety of unique gift items that would make for wonderful Christmas presents, games of chance, and just a lot of wholesome fun.

For all the new people in our community, the Delta-Greely Youth Skating Association is a non-profit organization designed to develop hockey and figure skating skills in our youth from ages 4 to 14. The Association provides more than just certified coaches. With funds from the past three Galas and revenue from DREDC and the City of Delta Junction, the Association has purchased 45 hockey and figure skating kits that are leased to a skater for the season. The kits are for introducing the game to the skater and make this winter activity more affordable to the family. As of October 30, 2007, 26 kits have been issued so there are more available if your skater is still interested in playing this season. To register, call the registrar, Dawn Grossmann at 895-1910.

What else do we do? The Association uses a City building and with the volunteer efforts of many, the Association maintains a facility with lights, heat and ice. For those who don’t know, the ice is available for classroom skating, private parties, community skating on Sunday (this year we hope to include some Saturday nights), youth, adult and High School practices and games and tournaments. Last year, the City of Delta helped with the increase in fuel and electric costs. The City also covers the liability expenses of the building.

How does the Association pay for operation costs for a skating season? Revenue from the youth programs comes from registration and with the volunteer efforts of the families, revenue is generated from recycling cans, concession stand sales, hosting Community skate, skate a thon, tournaments and the dinner/auction Gala. Eighty-five percent (85%) of the revenue that funds operation costs comes from our Community’s Businesses and Individuals through Sponsorships, donations, gift items for the auction and their presence at the Gala.

Where are we going with this program? The Association would like to increase youth program participation and Community use of the rink. Perhaps someday, there will be appropriate matting to accommodate indoor soccer, nets for basketball and a stage for performances. With the new improvements to the arena, there are lots of future possibilities. But for now, we are gearing up to skate.

BBB Wise Giving Alliance Advises Donors on California Wildfire Relief Efforts

Press release from the Better Business Bureau

Do Your Research When Giving to Charities

October 29, 2007—Anchorage, Alaska,—Many Americans want to help the thousands of Southern Californians displaced by the recent wildfires, and the most common way people across the country can do this is by making donations to the many relief agencies and charities already at work.

As with every natural disaster, however, there are some unscrupulous people who will attempt to take advantage of the public’s eagerness to help victims. The BBB Wise Giving Alliance offers the following advice for donors to ensure their donations go to trustworthy relief efforts.

“In the face of any disaster, Americans will immediately step forward with donations to aid the victims and their families,” said Art Taylor, CEO of the BBB Wise Giving Alliance. “Unfortunately, as we saw after Hurricane Katrina, scammers will try to take advantage of the generosity of the public; that’s why it’s important to take your time and do your research before donating to a charity relief effort.”

The BBB Wise Giving Alliance offers the following advice to make sure your donations go to worthy charities and relief efforts:

  • Before making a contribution, go to www.bbb.org/charity to obtain detailed evaluative reports on many of the relief organizations providing assistance.
  • Be wary of charities that are reluctant to answer reasonable questions about their operations, finances and programs.
  • Ask for written information that describes the charity’s program(s) and finances such as the charity’s latest annual report and financial statements.
  • Find out what the charity intends to do with any excess contributions remaining after they have fully funded the disaster relief activities mentioned in solicitations.
  • Do not give cash. Checks or money orders should be made out to the name of the charitable organization, not to the individual collecting the donation.
  • Keep an eye out for fake charities that imitate the name and style of well-known organizations in order to confuse people and potentially steal personal information such as credit card numbers.
  • Don’t give in to excessive pressure for on-the-spot donations. Be wary of any request to send a “runner” to pick up your contribution.
  • Think twice about donating to any charity that is inexperienced in carrying out relief efforts but is suddenly soliciting for aid for Southern California. Although well intentioned, such organizations may not have the ability to quickly deliver aid to those in need.
  • Be wary of appeals that are long on emotion, but short on describing what the charity will do to address the needs of victims and their families.
  • Do not give your credit card number or other personal information to a telephone solicitor or in response to an e-mail solicitation.
  • To help ensure your contribution is tax deductible, donations should be made to charitable organizations that are tax exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Go to IRS Publication 78 on www.irs.gov for a current list of all organizations eligible to receive contributions deductible as charitable gifts.

For more information on the BBB Wise Giving Alliance and to view more than one thousand BBB Wise Giving ReportsTM on charities across the nation go to www.bbb.org/charity. To find information on local charities and organizations, visit your local BBB at www.bbb.org.

Community Concert a Smashing Success

Exclusive to Delta News Web

On Wednesday evening, the Library Board of Directors presented Troubadour Bill Staines in concert. 70 plus folks listened in rapt attention tapped their toes and bobbed their heads while Mr. Staines played his guitar, performed his original songs and stories, and even yodeled while performing a Nanci Griffith song entitled Night Rider’s Lament.

The Community Center was beautifully decorated and lighted by members of the Board.

Mr. Staines maintains a rigorous touring schedule, performing 300 times a year. Tonight was his eighth appearance in Alaska, and several of his original songs have an Alaskan topical theme. He is an enchanting performer, drawing his audience in and holding their attention for the entire 2 hour span of his program and a standing ovation/encore.

Thanks to the Library Board for bringing this delightful performer to Delta, thanks to the decorating committee, and thank those of you who attended for supporting live music in Delta Junction!

Deployment Exercises - Test

FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska – Garrison employees will conduct a deployment exercise here beginning Monday, October 29.

“The exercise will validate the process for a quick deployment,” said Felicia Jackson, garrison operations officer.

The 25th Brigade Support Battalion and 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry will participate in the exercise, as well as employees of Shaw Contractors and the Alaska Railroad.
Residents and visitors on post will see increased traffic and activity at the Alert Holding Area, and shuttle buses moving Soldiers through post. The buses are for the exercise only, and not for other purposes by personnel not participating in the exercise. The garrison is also working with Eielson Air Force Base, where planes loaded with equipment by garrison personnel will fly to Allen Army Airfield at Fort Greely to simulate a deployment.

The Shaw and ARR employees will augment a rail outload, alleviating the necessity to use Soldiers in that capacity.

“It’s essentially a test of the support the garrison provides in a deployment,” Jackson said. “It tells us what we’re doing right and where we need improvement so we can help the units deploy quickly and efficiently when they receive orders.”

The exercise is expected to last until Thursday evening.

Water and Mining Initiative Certified

October 22, 2007, Juneau, Alaska – Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell certified an initiative related to water quality standards on new large-scale mining operations. The lieutenant governor certified that the bill and application were in proper form, allowing the sponsors to proceed with gathering signatures required to place the measure on the ballot.

The initiative, known as 07WTR3, was the sponsors’ third attempt at certification. Earlier initiative applications were denied certification because they contained unconstitutional appropriations of state resources. The initiative sponsors made corresponding revisions to this third application.

Lieutenant Governor Parnell’s decision to certify the third initiative (07WTR3) was supported by a Department of Law legal opinion dated October 17, 2007, which concluded that the application complies with the constitutional and statutory provisions governing the use of the initiative. Also, the opinion indicates that the changes made to the third application remove the provision that was believed to be an impermissible appropriation.

Petition booklets will be prepared by the Division of Elections and distributed to the sponsors of the initiative. The sponsors will have one year to collect at least 23,831 signatures from qualified voters over 30 election districts in order for the proposed bill to be placed on a ballot.

The Department of Law’s legal opinion is available online
The lieutenant governor’s letter to the initiative’s sponsors is available online
The Division of Elections' memorandum is available online

Chinook by George M Hosier II - Whippersnappers

Gomer Clodhopper didn’t talk much. It had taken years for him to perfect loafing to a fine art, and he had chosen to settle down in Moose Hole, Alaska, specifically because the atmosphere of this bush village seemed the ideal environment for the continuation of his research. As a result, you could count on three fingers the topics that Gomer deemed worth the energy expenditure required to activate his vocal chords. On the rare occasion when a person was able to coax him into uttering more than two mono-syllabic grunts in succession, you could bet that he would be discussing hunt-n-fishin’, chawin’ terbaccy, or whippersnappers.

I never could figure out exactly what a “whippersnapper” was. The word evoked images in my young mind of a lion trainer or Indiana Jones, but Gomer’s descriptions of them were not nearly as dashing. One thing was clear, however. Whippersnappers were always young. Perhaps their occupation was so dangerous that they inevitably met a horrible fate before they had a chance to reach middle age.

Frost forms when water vapour freezes into ice crystals on cold surfaces.

Hoar frost occurs when water vapour touches a very cold surface and freezes on it instantly. This can happen to the leaves and branches of plants, and will cover them with ice crystals that look like spiky fingers.

Rime is ice formed when a damp, icy wind blows over flowers, branches and other surfaces. Rime frost looks like icing around the edge of petals and leaves, and only occurs when the temperatures are very low.

In particularly cold weather, fern frost may appear on windows. This happens when tiny water droplets (dew) first form on the cold glass. These then turn into ice and more moisture freezes on top. As this process continues, more ice crystals are formed and the frost develops into what looks like feathery fingers.

Fern frost can create beautiful patterns of ice crystals, which often look leaf or fern like – hence the name.

Frost is white because the crystals contain air.

MOPS News

Well, we are off to a great start this year. We have had two meetings, over 30 women, and about 40-50 preschoolers. Our theme for this year is “The Home Factor.” We are learning to find contentment wherever we are, to make a home that our families want to come home to no matter what kind of a house we live in whether it be an apartment, base housing, a cabin, a well-coordinated home, or an igloo, we want to come home and feel like we’re Home.

The first two meeting have gone great! Good food, great adult conversation, and loads of laughs! This month we meet again on Tuesday, October 16th at 10:00am at the First Baptist Church on the Richardson Highway, then again on Tuesday, November 6th. We will be doing a craft so be ready to use that part of your brain that is collecting dust because you can’t seem to get past the part of laying everything out to make that quilt or scrapbook without being interrupted with a request for a band aid or a cheese stick. We want to flex those creative muscles we know are there somewhere, just like the ones that are covered with that soft squishy layer called…a baby belly. Speaking of exercise we have been meeting twice a week for dance aerobics (plus stretching and abs) on Mondays and Wednesday mornings from 9-10am at the activities building gym next to the First Baptist Church. Young children are welcome; they can play while we work out. Bring a large towel, 2lb weights, water, and snacks for your children. We dance and have a blast getting in shape. Invite your friends; all women of any age are welcome.

We have also started our weekly playgroups meeting in the same gym as aerobics on Thursday mornings from 10-11:30am. Mothers with young children are welcome, please no day care groups. I am happy to announce that our monthly “Mom’s Night Out” will start up again this month on October 20th we will be meeting at Adam’s Ribs in the back room at 6:00pm. Mom’s only, no children please unless you are nursing of course, we will never turn anyone away especially a newborn baby. Be ready to laugh your bellies off, we have never had a night that didn’t last hours and end with sore cheeks from smiling all night. Your husbands will thank you for going, it is a nice chance to pull that “old you” out of the closet for a date. And yes, we do get dressed up on occasion.

Lots of exciting stuff is happening here at MOPS this year. It’s not just a two hour meeting twice a month. We have things going all the time and friendships growing in the process. We are here to support each other through this sometimes difficult (but always worth it) phase of mothering because “better moms make a better world.” Come home to MOPS!

The Association would like to thank all who have contributed by their sponsorship, donation, gift item(s) and volunteer effort. Your support has funded operation costs at the Liewer-Olmstead Arena, boosted the Kit-a-Kid program, provided tournaments, equipped the teams with jerseys, goalie gear and first aide kits, helped improve the concession stand, allowed us to award a scholarship to one of our graduating seniors and most importantly provided over 100 young skaters with a healthy winter activity.

The list of supporters is too large to mention but we would like to acknowledge our sponsors: Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, Buffalo Center Drive-In, Delta Concrete, Ron Liewer, The Trophy Lodge, J&L Ventures, Arctic Fox Safety and Supply, Crossroads Dentistry, Delta Homes, Delta Meat and Sausage, Gene’s Chrysler, Moose Lodge and Polaris Junction.

The arena provides many hours of wholesome recreational fun for the children and adults of our community. This year, the Association hopes to increase the availability of the arena to the community as well as strengthen the existing hockey and figure skating programs. If you would like to donate in some way or become a part of all this fun, speak to any parent with skaters in the program or call Dawn Grossmann at 895-1910 or Rose Edgren at 895-4043.

Respectfully,

Moose Population is Thinning

According to Steve DuBois from the Department of Fish and Game here in Delta he said that 114 moose have been harvested so far.
900 drawing permits have been issued for the hunt, which is open through Nov 15. The permits have been issued in the hopes of thinning out the moose population and to prevent over-browsing in certain areas.

Fort Greely plans on two new interceptors by the end of the year

By the end of this year, two additional interceptors will be installed. Currently Fort Greely has 20 missiles. Long term plan calls for a total of 54 interceptors and Fort Greely will have 40, 4 in California and 10 in Poland.

Successful testing last month with a dummy missile was shot down from California's Air Force Base, and Lehner says the US is ready in the event of a real attack.
