Major U.S. Food and Beverage Companies Comply With Pledges On Kids' Advertising

BBB issues progress report on Children’s Food & Beverage Advertising Initiative, announces Nestlé USA as new participant
Anchorage, AK – July 30, 2008 – The Council of Better Business Bureaus yesterday released its first report on the progress that participants in BBB’s groundbreaking self-regulation program — the Children’s Food & Beverage Advertising Initiative — have made in changing the children’s food and beverage advertising landscape. BBB has assessed the participants’ compliance with their pledges regarding child-directed advertising of their food and beverage products and concluded that the participants met their pledge obligations and that the few minor compliance issues that occurred have been remedied. BBB also announced today that Nestlé USA, maker of Juicy Juice® and Nestlé® Nesquik®, has joined the Initiative.

The Children’s Food & Beverage Advertising Initiative was created in 2006 by BBB and 10 major food and beverage companies, which accounted for more than two-thirds of children’s food and beverage television advertising expenditures in 2004. Of the now 14 program participants, four companies have pledged to not advertise their food and beverage products to children and nine have pledged to advertise only better-for-you products in advertising primarily directed to children under 12. BBB will announce Nestlé USA’s specific commitment at a later time.

“The participants in the Initiative are to be commended for their leadership in taking proactive steps to address concerns about advertising directed to children under 12 and childhood obesity,” said Elaine Kolish, director of the Children’s Food & Beverage Advertising Initiative. “Through the implementation of their pledges, the companies’ advertising to the nation’s children has already undergone a substantial shift toward the promotion of better-for-you foods.”

The report focuses primarily on Campbell Soup Company, The Coca-Cola Company, the Hershey Company, Kraft Foods Global, Inc., Mars, Inc., and Unilever United States – the six participants that implemented their pledges between July and December 2007. The report concludes that these participants successfully implemented their pledges to either not advertise to children under 12 or only advertise products that meet specific better-for-you criteria.

The report is based on BBB monitoring of advertising and in-depth review of detailed compliance reports and documentation submitted by the participants. The report concludes that:

  • The Coca-Cola Company, Hershey Company and Mars, Inc., fulfilled their pledges to not engage in any child-directed advertising in media covered by the Initiative.
  • Kraft Foods Global, Inc. met its pledge to limit all child-directed advertising to better-for-you products under its Sensible Solution program.
  • Campbell Soup Company and Unilever met their pledges to limit child-directed advertising to better-for-you foods. In a few instances, food products that did not meet their nutrition criteria appeared on their child-directed Web sites. Campbell Soup Company and Unilever immediately removed the products after being notified by BBB or upon their own discovery of the materials.

The report also includes an update on the notable progress made by six participants of the Initiative during the July-December 2007 period: Burger King Corp., Cadbury Adams USA LLC, General Mills, Inc., Kellogg Company, McDonald’s USA, LLC, and PepsiCo, Inc. (Because the ConAgra Foods, Inc. pledge was not announced until 2008, ConAgra was not asked to submit a report for the 2007 period.) These participants are currently in the process of implementing their pledges and many have already taken steps to change or develop new product offerings, reformulate recipes, promote nutrition and healthy lifestyle messages, and adjust their child-directed advertising strategies.

Under the program, BBB continuously monitors participant compliance and will release annual reports detailing its findings.

BBB also announced today that Nestlé USA has become the 14th participant in the Initiative, and its participation will add to the changes that are already occurring in children’s food and beverage advertising. BBB is currently working with the company on development of its pledge and anticipates announcing the details of the pledge within the next 90 days.

“Nestlé USA is pleased to join the Council of Better Business Bureaus Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative,” said Brad Alford, Chairman and CEO of Nestlé USA. “Nestlé is committed to responsible advertising to consumers, and we believe that companies like ours do play an important role in offering healthy dietary choices and lifestyles for children. We believe joining this initiative is important, and a positive move in continuing our journey to become a Nutrition, Health & Wellness company.”

“The Initiative is a dynamic program that is continually monitoring the latest research and developments in nutrition science so that we can ensure that participants base their better-for-you nutrition criteria on established scientific and/or government standards,” added Kolish. “BBB and the Initiative participants will work together in the coming months to expand company participation, increase awareness of the Initiative among parents, as well as solicit informal feedback from advocacy groups and government agencies on how to improve on the success of the program.”

Norm Eck Named Alaska Superintendent of the Year

The Alaska Association of School Administrators (AASA) has announced that Norm Eck is Alaska’s Superintendent of the Year for 2008-09.

Norm Eck has been Superintendent of the Northwest Arctic Borough School District since 2005 and has been employed in various administrative capacities within the district since 1998. Prior to being appointed Superintendent, Dr. Eck was Principal of Kotzebue Middle/High School, he served as Director of State and Federal Programs for the district, and for five years he was Principal of the Davis-Ramoth School in the village of Selawick. Before moving to the Northwest Arctic Borough, Norm served the community of Hydaburg in Southeast Alaska as Principal of their K-12 school.

The Northwest Arctic Borough School District, located 33 miles north of the Arctic Circle on Kotzebue Sound of the Chukchi Sea, enrolls about 1,950 students in 11 different locations over 36,000 square miles. Two schools are in the city of Kotzebue and there is one school in each of ten surrounding villages. Dr. Eck is noted for having standardized all schools with one school calendar and for aligning the district’s curriculum to the state’s standards-based assessments. These initiatives required difficult decisions but have resulted in improved student achievement. As stated in the nomination provided by the school board president, “Since he has been our Superintendent, with all of these changes we’re starting to see some progress…last year 6 of our schools made AYP and we’re striving for all 12 to make AYP…” As an active leader in the community, Norm is a member of the Northwest Arctic Leadership Team, a group of local organization leaders who collaborate on regional needs and priorities and have been successful in securing funding for a number of important school construction projects.

Alaskan administrators have nominated Dr. Eck for National Superintendent of the Year. His nomination will be advanced to the American Association of School Administrators for consideration next February at the association’s annual conference in San Francisco.

The selection committee was comprised of representatives from the PTA (parents), NEA-Alaska (teachers), AASSP and AAESP (secondary and elementary principals), AASB (school boards), State Chamber of Commerce (business), a former Superintendent of the Year and President of AASA. Dr. Donna Peterson, Superintendent of the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, chaired the committee on behalf of AASA

Thank you Carol Watkins for your contributions to the Delta News Web. If you see Carol on the streets, please take a moment and stop and thank her for the beautiful photo displays she always puts together for our community to enjoy.

The photos speak for themselves. They are photos of the 2008 Deltana Fair parade. I have heard many comments on the parade this year. Many have said it was awesome and the best parade they have ever seen in Delta. It was the longest as well, many folks are reporting. Good job to all the participants. Panama - Alaska Friendship Rally took place May 1 - June 28. They drove their classic cars over the Inter-America Highway from Panama to Alaska. Lasting 8 weeks and averaging 425 kms daily, this 18,000 km tour goes via Guatemala, Honduras and the Yucatan peninsula then a predominantly rural route north through Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Montana, British Columbia, the Yukon Territory and Alaska. The participants were driving Jaguars, Mercedes Benz, Aston Martins, Austin Healeys, MGs and others. This ride is not a race, just a way to put others in touch with many historical and interesting places that fans might not have known about, and to spread a little friendship among classic car lovers everywhere. Public Notice - Fort Greely (RAB) Meeting

Fort Greely, Alaska--The Fort Greely Installation Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) will meet at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, 20 August 2008, at the City Hall in Delta Junction, Alaska.

The goal of the RAB is to give individuals who represent the diverse interests of the community the opportunity to regularly review progress and interact with the decision makers concerning Fort Greely's environmental restoration program. The aim is to increase public understanding and the quality of the installation environmental restoration program.

The RAB meetings are held quarterly, are announced in advance and are open to the public.

The RAB assisted with the restoration efforts required by the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process from 1995 until portions of Fort Greely were withdrawn from surplus in 2001 to support the U.S. missile defense program. The RAB is now assisting with the Fort Greely installation environmental restoration program.

The RAB membership currently includes: Community Co-Chair Stephen Hammond, the Fort Greely garrison commander’s designated representative, Chris Boerst; community members Dick Anderson, Steve Fields, Pete Hallgren, Tom Miller, Mike Murphy, Carol Stock, and Mary Leith-Dowling. A representative from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation participates in each meeting, as does a representative from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency when possible.

Members of the RAB have committed to a goal of attending all RAB meetings and devoting ample time to review any related Army documents within prescribed time frames.

Public participation on the RAB is strictly voluntary. The Army does not provide financial support to the public members for their services nor are members compensated for work hours lost or time invested.

For more information about the RAB and its activities, call Stephen Hammond at telephone 907-895-5441, see the RAB's website at www.smdcen.us/rabfga, or call Wayne Tolliver, Fort Greely environmental coordinator, at telephone 907-873-4664.

Delta Christian Drama Association Performing "Everything Skit"

Dear Friends of DCDA.

Many of you have probably seen the "Everything Skit" on Youtube or Godtube that has swept the nation and the world. If you haven't seen this six minutes of in-your-face gospel that leaves nearly everybody who watches it profoundly moved, then I urge you to do a Youtube or Godtube search right now using the key words, "Lifehouse Everything Skit." There are multiple versions. Pick one and watch it, then watch it again with an unsaved friend, or a Christian who has strayed in their walk with the Lord.

Better yet, bring them to Deltana Fair! Delta Christian Drama Association is scheduled to perform the Everything Skit at 6:00pm Friday, July 25, or 12:00 Sunday July 27. Pray for us that this presentation will touch lives in Delta Junction and that the Lord Jesus Christ will be glorified. Please don't be late, because, this short and fast moving skit is packed with symbolism that cannot be fully appreciated if it is not seen from beginning to end.

Please help us spread the word and invite everybody you know. God bless each of you for your ongoing support of our ministry.

In Him,
George Hosier
DCDA President

Summer’s morning dew on my flowers. It's hard to believe that we are already in the middle of July. Summer has not been everything us Alaskan's would have hoped it to be, but we have had some nice weather. Hopefully the weather man is not telling the truth for today through next week, when he is saying 60% chance of rain. Photo Courtesy Deborah Snyder

BBB Receives Thousands of Complaints on Suspicious Credit Card Charges

Marketing company is charging online shoppers every month without their knowledge

Anchorage, AK – July 15, 2008 – Your BBB wants to warn consumers to closely check their credit card statements for suspicious charges. Thousands of consumers have filed complaints with their BBB. Upset online shoppers have contacted their BBB about suspicious credit card charges. The charges are traced to a Connecticut-based marketing company, Affinion Group, who recently changed its name from Trilegiant.

In the past 12 months, BBB has received almost 1,800 complaints regarding Affinion Group. Most complainants state that they were shocked when they discovered unwanted charges on their credit card for membership services such as “Shoppers Advantage,” “Privacy Guard” or “Great Fun.” Charges ranged from $12 to $59.99 every month. Some consumers were charged by Affinion Group every month for years, resulting in hundreds of dollars being paid for services they never took advantage of or realized they had signed up for.

Consumers who are signed up for Affinion’s programs usually don’t provide their credit card information. The large volume and pattern of complaints many BBBs have been receiving indicates that Affinion is not taking the appropriate steps to ensure consumers understand exactly what they’re getting into when they click on enticing pop-up ads—and that’s why they have a longstanding unsatisfactory record in their BBB.

Some complainants were able to retrace their steps and find out how they were inadvertently signed up for membership services that resulted in the monthly charges. Typically, consumers had purchased items online, such as movie or airline tickets, from a reputable Web site. At some point in the transaction process, pop-up ads or chat boxes appeared offering incentives, such as $20 rebate cards for the Web site or claims such as, “Click here for your 10% savings.”

Complainants allege they were signed up for unwanted services simply by clicking on pop-up ads or replying to chat windows, even though they ultimately declined the offers. Complainants never provided their credit card information to ads or chats because the company with which they had just made their online purchase had a pre-established agreement with Affinion Group to automatically transfer consumer information when they clicked on the ad or chat.

Most complainants report to BBB that they have no idea how or why they were being charged and were extremely angry when they discovered how much money they had lost through affinity marketing practices. Unfortunately, many credit card holders are learning the hard way about the value of reviewing their financial statements every month.

BBB has also received complaints from consumers who knowingly signed up for the memberships or services with the promise that they could cancel after a month and pay nothing. In the end, they never received the promised rebate cards or incentives, or were given the runaround when they tried to cancel their membership.

In 2006, 16 state Attorneys General reached a settlement with Trilegiant Corp. and Chase Bank totaling $14.5 million, to resolve allegations that the two companies partnered to deceive consumers into paying for membership programs. According to BBB records, Trilegiant is now doing business as Affinion Group.

Chinook by George M Hosier II - The Fondue Pot

Alaskans are blessed in many ways. However, in other ways we are woefully deprived. One of the areas in which we have been most deprived is in the acquisition of a distinctive regional dialect, unless you consider the speech of Alaska’s indigenous people to be our colloquial heritage. You see, an accent is kind of like cheese. It must be allowed a long time to properly age. Likewise, to cultivate a full-bodied accent, residents have to be rooted to an area for several generations in order to develop little quirks of inflection and mispronunciation unique to their local culture.

Furthermore, cheese must be left alone while it develops its full flavor. People also must remain isolated from other folks during the dialect brewing process, so they don’t start copying their neighbors. On this point fate was not kind to Alaskans. By the time white folks began arriving in the Last Frontier in any significant numbers, radio had already been invented. Television wasn’t far behind. As a result, Alaskan dialect is about as piquant and nuanced as Velveeta when compared to the Gouda jargon of deep-woods Maine, the Romano vernacular of Puget Sound or the Extra Sharp Cheddar brogue of the Louisiana Bayous.
