BBB Warns Against Swine Flu Scams
Anchorage, Alaska – April 28, 2009 – Relying on reports from online security experts, Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to be on the lookout for fraudulent emails and Web sites trying to take advantage of the current swine flu outbreak.
“Scammers read newspapers, watch TV and surf the Internet and they know that by using a hook from the day’s top headlines, that they’ll be able to catch lots of fish,” said Robert W.G. Andrew, CEO of BBB serving Alaska, Oregon, and Western Washington. “Right now, issues associated with swine flu and a potential pandemic are of global interest and that means scammers have a very large pond to go phishing in.”
According to McAfee Avert Labs, an online security company, spammers began pumping out e-mails as soon as the first accounts of swine flu were being reported in the news, accounting for two percent of all spam messages. The messages include such subject lines as, “Madonna caught swine flu!” and “Swine flu in Hollywood!” The company reports that the e-mails do not contain malware but often link to online pharmacies.
According to F-Secure Corp., another online security company, more than 250 Web sites with the term “swine flu” have been registered within the first few days following the announcement of the outbreak and predict that the scams artists are preparing to use such Web sites in a variety of different online scams. F-Secure also reports that one Web site is already selling a “Swine Flu Survival Guide” PDF for $19.95.
BBB offers the following advice to avoid swine flu scams:
- Avoid opening any e-mail from an unknown source and do not click on any links in the body of the e-mail or open any attachments. Instead, delete the e-mail or report it to the Federal Trade Commission by forwarding the e-mail to spam@uce.gov.
- Don’t believe online offers for vaccinations against swine flu because a vaccine does not exist.
- Consumers are encouraged to check their state’s Department of Health Web sites for updates and further information concerning this issue:
Federal: www.cdc.gov/swineflu
Alaska: www.pandemicflu.alaska.gov
Make sure your anti-virus and anti-spyware software is up to date and all operating system security patches have been installed. If your computer becomes infected as the result of a spam e-mail about swine flu, you can report it to the Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov.

Current Swine Flu OutBreak
On the national level, see the CDC Swine Flu page.
For a global view of the current outbreak, check the World Health Organization page.
The State of Alaska has had a pandemic influenza plan in place for some time. You can view the plan here.
When reading this plan, please bear in mind that planners often plan for the worst and hope for the best. As of this writing, no confirmed cases of swine flu exist in Alaska. Please see one of the pages above for further updates.

Multi-tasker Earl McNabb with Delta Industrial sits at his desk in his office, affectionately called "Earl's Crab Shack" located just behind Delta Industrial in the equipment yard. Earl's office chair was replaced by the Relay for Life "Purple Potty". Earl received the potty from "friends" at the Delta Chamber of Commerce. His co-workers then snuck into his office and bolted the potty to the floor right in front of his desk leaving him the potty as the only choice for a seat. Earl proudly perches on his throne as he accomplishes his daily tasks. Ladies this is proof that men can really multi-task. Photo Courtesy Dani Markham Thursday, April 23, 2009

Alpha Omega Life Care Inc, Actions
We hold membership in the Coalition. The event was attended by 120 other enthusiastic members from all around the state--cities and villages--and facilitated by a dynamic team of professionals and knowledgeable presenters.
Then, on the weekend, Alpha Omega received a shipment of --count ‘em--three and a half TONS of food for distribution to qualified recipients in the Interior. That caseload has been steadily increasing--little surprise there--and will continue to do so. Fortunately, available food for distribution has increased as well. Alpha Omega Life Care Inc has, as one of several Board of Director mandated missions, that of Hunger Abatement, and is an active member of the Alaska
Food Coalition. We hope that the community is aware that the Agency
receives no wages, salary, or other remuneration for the Hunger Abatement efforts--our personal and professional lives are devoted to service.
On Monday, a committee from the Governor’s Council on Disabilities and Special Education visited and listened to the community comment upon services. We were there too.
On Tuesday, Alpha Omega Life Care Inc and guests attended the Flint Hills Resources Golden Heart Awards 11th Annual Reception, recognizing volunteers in the community. Judith Farrow and Bruce Marden were nominees, and the horse doovers were spectacular!
Alpha Omega Life Care Inc continues to be overwhelmingly busy serving the community. If you are able, stop by the office in order to become acquainted and learn of our service menu--then tell us how much time you are willing to volunteer. Thank you.

Checks Disguised as Free Money, has Fraudulent Funds
Anchorage, Alaska – April 21, 2009 – Your Better Business Bureau warns that consumers are receiving fake or stolen checks in the mail. Depositing these checks usually result in the consumer’s money being swiped—not funded.
The check arrives in the mail with a letter stating why the money was received. The letter will go on to say that a portion of the money needs to be returned to the sender or sent to another source via money wire, check or cash to pay for taxes, shipping, fees, etc.
Lucky people who try to deposit the scam check get stopped by a bank teller. However, with better printing and computer technologies, consumers are often able to deposit the check. They normally find out after they’ve transferred funds to the scam artist that the money never comes or the money arrives but is stolen from another person or business’ account. This can put a freeze on the consumer’s account and requires the consumer to pay back the money to the rightful owner, including the funds sent to the scam artist.
Common excuses scammers use to send letters with fake checks:
- Overpayment offers. Consumers or businesses selling an item online or in classifieds are contacted by a buyer and told the buyer will purchase the item and will send extra money to cover shipping costs. The buyer then requests that the seller send or give the extra money to another business or person handling the shipping.
A new approach to this scam: An Alaska resident contacted your BBB stating multiple people attempted this scam when he tried to sell his puppies through classifieds. - Lottery, sweepstakes or grant winnings. Consumers are sent a check and letter stating they won a lottery, sweepstakes or grant. It requests that the consumer deposit the funds and send a portion back to pay for taxes on their winnings.
Recently, consumers are contacting BBB stating they received such a letter from Canada with a check that appears to come from a U.S. business. Remember, it is illegal for U.S. citizens to participate in foreign lotteries. Also, if you did not purchase the lottery ticket, or apply for the sweepstakes or government grant, you should not receive the funds. - Foreign business or work-at-home job offers. Consumers are sent a check and a letter stating they are receiving an employment offer. The consumer can keep a portion of the money from the check if they do a job, such as secret shopping. In other cases, consumers are under the impression they are working for an overseas company and their checks will come from a U.S. company associated with the employer. But the check overpays the employee, who is instructed to wire overpayment to the overseas company.
Be aware of the above common counterfeit check schemes. Report check fraud to the Federal Trade Commission, 1-877-382-4357, and the Alaska Attorney General, 269-5200. Report postal mail fraud to the United States Postal Inspection Service, 1-800-372-8347. Get a BBB Reliability Report on businesses and organizations before working with them at www.bbb.org or 562-0704.

Fort Greely Installation Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) Meeting
The goal of the RAB is to give individuals who represent the diverse interests of the community the opportunity to regularly review progress and interact with the decision makers concerning Fort Greely's environmental restoration program. The aim is to increase public understanding and the quality of the installation environmental restoration program.
The RAB meetings are held quarterly, are announced in advance and are open to the public.
The RAB assisted with the restoration efforts required by the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process from 1995 until portions of Fort Greely were withdrawn from surplus in 2001 to support the U.S. missile defense program. The RAB is now assisting with the Fort Greely installation environmental restoration program.
The RAB membership currently includes: Installation Co-Chair, Lt. Col. Chris Chronis, the Fort Greely garrison commander; Community Co-Chair Stephen Hammond; the Fort Greely garrison commander’s designated representative, Chris Boerst; and community members Dick Anderson, Steve Fields, Pete Hallgren, Tom Miller, Mike Murphy, Carol Stock, and Mary Leith-Dowling. A representative from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation participates in each meeting, as does a representative from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency when possible.
Members of the RAB have committed to a goal of attending all RAB meetings and devoting ample time to review any related Army documents within prescribed time frames.
Public participation on the RAB is strictly voluntary. The Army does not provide financial support to the public members for their services nor are members compensated for work hours lost or time invested.
For more information about the RAB and its activities, call Stephen Hammond at telephone 907-895-5441, see the RAB's website at www.smdcen.us/rabfga, or call Wayne Tolliver, Fort Greely environmental coordinator, at telephone 907-873-4664.

Easter Written by Pastor Howard Echo-Hawk
Not the fact that most of his trusted friends ran like rabbits when he needed someone to count on.
All this is true.
What is amazing to me is.
He became sin.
He just didn’t bear it, he became it. All unclean thought, deed and action., every despicable, diabolical action ever done or thought of. He became it.
Because of this, the relationship that he had with his Father was severed and cut off. He was “flying blind”. The day to day, moment by moment intimate times he had was gone, just a memory. Father God had to turn his back on sin. And the Lord’s world went dark. Oh, he had the writings of this Father. He knew in his head. But, his heart said, He left me, rejected me, abandoned me.
He knew his purpose, his destiny. He knew. But, it was so hard to be alone. Since he was baptized by his cousin he walked in an open heaven. He could see, hear and feel the presence of his Father. But now….now it was dark and quiet.
My God, My God. Why have you forsaken me!
It was indeed Friday…But, he knew Sunday was coming!
He knew death couldn’t hold him, corruption couldn’t get his cold, clammy, slimy hands on him.
He knew, but the loneliness was deep and complete on Friday.
On Sunday, after the scripture was fulfilled. He rose from the dead.
His death wrappings he left on the cave floor. But the napkin about his head, he folded and laid it aside.
He as the head of a many membered body completed his purpose.
The death napkin about his head was laid aside.
But, the wrappings that was about His body…I believe he is waiting for His body to get together to shake it out and fold it and lay it aside and complete their destiny on earth. It appears to me that will take a team effort.
Are we willing to believe? Are we willing to grab hold of that which he did. And shake it out and leave the wrappings of this world behind. Somebody will walk in resurrection life and purpose.
Someone will. It might as well be us.
Who Knew Science Was So Fun?
All the students at Delta Elementary were able to experience first hand how exciting and fun science in the real world really is! Thanks to Mr. Jeff Lansing, the counselor, at Delta Elementary, the students were able to participate in a Science / Job Fair where several members of the community and UAF demonstrated aspects of the science industry.
The students and staff were awed, thrilled and motivated by the activities! They were able to learn about our solar system, engineering, soil conservation, alternative energy sources and production, what happens at the Cold Regions Test Center, and about chemistry.
Watch out for those unexpected explosions! The activites were the perfect ending to the busy testing week the students had just completed. It provided the opportunity for seeds of scientific interest to be planted. It will be exciting to see all that our future scientist accomplish.
THANK YOU very much Mr. Lansing for your hard work in organizing such a terrific event for all our students!!!

What is sent?
We look at transition to adulthood as holistically and inclusively as possible - so information about jobs, post-secondary education, scholarships, housing, transportation, leadership training/opportunities, and healthy living can all be posted here. This list is for youth with barriers specifically, so if you see an opportunity that is specific to a minority group, foster youth, homeless youth, youth with disabilities, and/or an opportunity that applies to everyone, please post it here. We also like information that is applicable to the local area as well as statewide.

Purple Hearts to be Awarded
Brady will receive the decoration for wounds he sustained after being shot by an enemy sniper Dec. 14, 2008. Evans was struck by shrapnel originating from an exploding 107mm rocket while conducting pre-combat checks and inspections for an upcoming mission Oct. 16, 2008. Both were assigned to the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division when they were wounded. Mireles was injured June 26, 2006, while serving with the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team in Rabia, Iraq. While conducting a combat patrol, his Stryker vehicle struck an improvised explosive device. Mireles sustained injuries to his face and legs as a result of the blast.
The Purple Heart is awarded to any member of the United States armed forces who is wounded or killed in action against an enemy. Its origins date to Gen. George Washington in 1782. It fell into disuse after the Revolutionary War until 1932 when President Herbert Hoover officially re-established it to honor the 200th anniversary of Washington’s birth. The Purple Heart stands as a tangible symbol of the service, sacrifice and merit of millions of American servicemen and women.

Karate Class Update ~ April 7
Thank you to everyone who has posted comments on the previous two posts about the Karate classes.
To all interested, I plan to start by the end of April. I am checking on available space at the school. As for age range, Martial arts are for anyone and everyone, all can learn and benefit. I would have to however adjust classes for either age groups or size. Prices will be depending on cost of equipment and space rent. I am working on that now. I would like to get a sign up list so I could put together a price.
I am Annette Hannan and I have been in Delta since June of 1995. I originally came from New Hampshire where I spent years studying and teaching Shaolin Kempo Karate. My 10 degree instructors have kept in touch with me. Most people know me as the horse riding instructor or trainer.
Please send your name to webeditor to sign up for the class, along with the number of people you are signing up with their age, your phone number and email address.
Thank you all. Keep the comments going!

Arctic Man Ski & Sno-Go Classic
The Arctic Man is a unique event that has grown to be one of the major winter events held within the state of Alaska wilderness. The 2009 Arctic Man is the 24th anniversary, that’s twenty-four years of adrenaline rush and speed.
The Arctic Man is a race for teams of two skilled competitors that tests the strength of an athlete and the horsepower of a snowmobile. Courage and training are essential elements of this team of snowmobile and skier.
The Arctic Man is one of the World's Toughest Downhill Ski races, and an exciting snowmobile race, all in one. The skier begins at a summit elevation of 5,800 feet and drops 1700 feet in less than two mile to the bottom of a narrow canyon where he meets up with his snowmobiling partner.
The snowmobiler meets the skier, on the go, with a tow rope and pulls the skier 2 1/4 miles uphill at top speeds of up to 86 mph. The skier and the snowmobile then separate and the skier goes over the side of the second mountain and drops another 1200 feet to the finish line.
At the Arctic Man you " GO FAST or GO HOME."
Truly the Ultimate Adrenaline Rush for spectators and competitors alike.Last year approximately 13,000 spectators came from around the nation as well as different countries around the world to enjoy this spectacular Alaskan event. The area the race is held is some of the best snowmachine riding country in the world. The snowcapped peaks and beauty make this spring event one that you will treasure for a lifetime.

DIRECTV Expands NFL Sunday coverage for Fans
Broadband Television
By 2012, DIRECTV will broadcast the NFL Sunday Ticket on satellite and broadband television connections – so even non-customers of DIRECTV will be able to watch their favorite NFL teams. DIRECTV customers who purchase the NFL Sunday Ticket and the SuperFan package watch all the Sunday games in High-Definition (or through the Supercast laptop web stream), receive an optional Game Mix channel that shows up to eight games simultaneously, the new Red Zone Channel, and the NFL Sunday Ticket Mobile service – streaming highlights and full-length games to wireless devices, so even if you’re not watching it from home, you can stay up-to-the-minute from your cell phone or pda.
Non-customers will also get more than NFL Sunday Ticket broadcasts, as the new “Red Zone Channel” will also be available through broadband television. The “Red Zone Channel” follows all the Sunday games (from 1p.m. EST to 4 p.m. EST), with real-time hosting (and fantasy league updates) of the day’s most dramatic so you don’t miss that amazing field goal or impossible touchdown.
The agreement between DIRECTV and NFL also extends DIRECTV’s coverage of the NFL Network’s regular weekday coverage, continuing its availability to customers who purchase the DIRECTV CHOICE package.
Microcom is the largest Alaskan retailer for DIRECTV and is based in Anchorage with offices in Fairbanks and Wasilla. Microcom has been serving satellite television customers in Alaska for over 25 years. For more information, please contact Jodi Curry at Microcom in Anchorage at 907 264-0053.

Delta Christian Drama Association - Spring Show

Click on the image for a photo enlargement.
Dear Friends,
Delta Christian Drama Association has been working hard to bring the Delta Junction community another wholesome, family friendly stage show.
The Prince's Gambit is set in the idyllic town of Volition in the fantasy kingdom of Destiny. This play is a medieval allegory of redemption. When Dr. Angelo's Shining, King Eonian's banished court jester shows up with his traveling magic show, the townspeople are deceived into forfeiting their citizenship and becoming enslaved by the shyster. Only, the heroic sacrificial intervention of Eonian's son, Prince Amnos, can rescue them.
Everybody is welcome to attend this original production on Saturday and Sunday May 2nd and 3rd, as well as the following Saturday and Sunday, May 9 and 10. All shows will begin at 7:00 pm and last for approximately one and a half hours. The drama will be hosted by Living Waters Assembly of God. As always, admission is free.
The audience will become the townsfolk of Volition as a ballad-singing minstrel strolls among them, and actors move up and down the aisles. The audience is encouraged to wear medieval costumes if they wish, in order to enhance their enjoyment of this unique presentation. A silent auction will be held on site to raise funds, and we encourage the public to bring some home baked cookies and participate in the free Community Cookie Social at intermission.
George Hosier
President
Delta Christian Drama Association
