All of America's service personnel and veterans deserve our gratitude, and it is fitting to pay tribute to the United States Asiatic Fleet.

The United States Navy's presence in the Far East dates to 1822. The Asiatic Fleet was formed in 1902, reestablished in 1910, and continued to serve into 1942. Through years of unrest and disturbance, the Fleet protected American lives and interests along the China coast and the Yangtze River, bearing responsibilities that were as much diplomatic as Naval. The Fleet also assisted civilian areas devastated by the forces of nature and by internal warfare.

When the attack on Pearl Harbor thrust the United States into World War II, the Asiatic Fleet played a key role in the defense of the Philippines. Outnumbered and outgunned at sea and in the air, the Fleet was joined by ships of the British, Dutch, and Australian navies to oppose the Japanese advance through what is now Indonesia. The Fleet's destroyers hit the Japanese at Balikpapan and Badung Strait, and the cruiser Marblehead fought her way through massive air attacks off Bali while submarines, short of fuel and torpedoes, struck Japanese supply lines.

The battle for the "Malay Barrier" reached its climax in the Java Sea. In the opening hours of March 1, 1942, the American cruiser Houston and the Australian cruiser Perth, outnumbered and outgunned by the Japanese, fought to the last in the Sunda Strait. They went down with their guns still firing and were followed hours later by the British cruiser Exeter. The remaining Allied ships were then ordered to make their way to Australia.

The Asiatic Fleet was no more, but its heritage of courage and selfless dedication helped spur our Navy to victory in World War II. Since then, the Seventh Fleet has carried on the Asiatic Fleet's duties, earning honor in Korea and Vietnam and helping to preserve peace and stability in East Asia. The men and women of our Naval services who saw the Cold War to a peaceful conclusion and won victory in Operation Desert Storm are worthy descendants of the sailors and Marines who earned glory in the Java Sea. As we pay tribute to the memory of the Asiatic Fleet, I call on all Americans to join me in saluting its proud heritage of bravery and honor.

The Congress, by Public Law 105-261, on October 17, 1998, has authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation in commemoration of the United States Navy Asiatic Fleet.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim Friday, March 1, 2002, as U.S. Navy Asiatic Fleet Memorial Day. I call upon all Americans to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies, activities, and programs.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this seventh day of June, in the year of our Lord two thousand one, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and twenty-fifth.

Made In Alaska Workshops 2010

This year Made In Alaska program is bringing workshops to Glennallen, Delta, Fairbanks & Nenana.

Glennallen workshop is on March 22nd at the Mt. Drum Lutheran Church.

Delta workshop is on March 23rd at the Jarvis Building (West).

Fairbanks workshop is on March 24th at the Princess Hotel.

Nenana workshop is on March 25th at the Nenana Civic Center.

All workshops start at 1pm. This year’s workshops are on Marketing Basics, Online Media, Postcard Marketing, and Photographing your product. All Made In Alaska permit holders are encouraged to bring their products to be photographed at the photography workshop. The schedule is as follows:

Purim is Sunday

Purim is a festival that commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people of the ancient Persian Empire from Haman's plot to annihilate them, as recorded in the Biblical Book of Esther (Megillat Esther). According to the story, Haman cast lots to determine the day upon which to exterminate the Jews.


Purim is celebrated annually according to the Hebrew calendar on the 14th day of the Hebrew month of Adar (Adar II in leap years), the day following the victory of the Jews over their enemies; as with all Jewish holidays, Purim begins at sundown on the previous secular day. In cities that were protected by a surrounding wall at the time of Joshua, including Shushan (Susa) and Jerusalem, Purim is celebrated on the 15th of the month, known as Shushan Purim. Purim is characterized by public recitation of the Book of Esther (keriat ha-megilla), giving mutual gifts of food and drink (mishloach manot), giving charity to the poor (mattanot la-evyonim), and a celebratory meal (se'udat Purim); other customs include drinking wine, wearing of masks and costumes, and public celebration.

Jewish exiles from the Kingdom of Judah who had been living in the Babylonian captivity (6th Century BCE) found themselves under Persian rule after Babylonia was in turn conquered by the Persian Empire. According to the Book of Esther, Haman, royal vizier to King Ahasuerus planned to kill the Jews, but his plans were foiled by Esther, his queen. Mordecai, a palace official, cousin and foster parent of Esther, subsequently replaced Haman. The Jews were delivered from being the victims of an evil decree against them and were instead allowed by the King to destroy their enemies, and the day after the battle was designated as a day of feasting and rejoicing.

Please Control Your Dogs

We are the Williams family. We live at the end of Strawberry, on Leng and Triple H Rd. February 24,  at 2:45 a.m. three large black dogs came to our place and attacked our dog. They corned him under our bedroom window and beat him up pretty bad.

It was a light night and I could see plainly and was able to intervene.

I want to warn all the folks in our neighborhood, there is a small pack of dogs running loose that are dangerous. Please, if you have a large black dog you don't control, you must restrain him. I've spent alot of time and energy training our dog to stay on our property. You can do the same. Thanks

New Credit Card Regulations Go Into Effect

BBB Explains How Protections Could Benefit Card Holders

Anchorage, Alaska – Feb. 24, 2010 – Nine months after it was enacted, the Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009 went into effect on Feb. 22, 2010, granting credit card holders new consumer protection rights. Meanwhile, a survey by CreditCards.com indicates that almost 75 percent of cardholders admit to not reading the terms and conditions of their credit cards.

“Credit card debt, fees and penalties can put American families in financial trouble," said Robert W.G. Andrew, CEO of Better Business Bureau serving Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington. "Consumers need to take the time to understand the fine print of their credit card agreements and learn about the consumer protection initiatives within the new CARD Act.”

BBB recommends that all consumers review the new provisions set forth by the Credit CARD Act of 2009:

More Notice for New Interest Rate Changes. Card issuers must give cardholders 45-days advance notice in the event of an interest rate change. Additionally, promotional rates must apply for at least six months and, unless disclosed up front, cardholders cannot have their rate increased in the first year.

Cardholder Opt-Out. If there are significant changes made to the terms of the account, cardholders can choose to reject those changes and will have five years to pay off the balance under the original terms.

Older Age Restrictions Added. Card issuers are no longer allowed to issue a credit card to anyone under 21 unless they can prove they have the means to repay debt or if an adult over 21 co-signs on the account. Credit card companies also face new restrictions on how they can promote cards to college students and can no longer offer free gifts as enticements on campuses.

New Rules for Monthly Statements. In response to complaints that bill due dates were being moved up—and leading to increased late fees—monthly statements must now be mailed or delivered 21 days prior to the due date. Additionally, card issuers can no longer set a payment deadline before 5 p.m. and cannot charge cardholders if they pay online, over the phone or by mail—unless the payment is made over the phone either on the due date or the previous day.

Overpayments Go Toward Highest Interest Balances. If the cardholder has varied interest rates for different services or accounts, any overpayments must be applied to the account that is incurring the highest interest rate.

Over the Limit Opt-In. Cardholders must opt-in to be able to exceed their credit limit—and subsequently be charged an over-limit fee by the issuer. If a cardholder chooses not to opt-in, then he or she will not be able to exceed their credit limit and incur any resultant fees.

Increased Disclosure on Minimum Payments. Card issuers must disclose how long it will take the cardholder to pay off their bill if they only pay the minimum monthly payment as well as how much the cardholder would need to pay every month to pay off the balance in 36 months.

Say Goodbye to Double-Billing Cycles. When calculating finance charges, card issuers can no longer employ two-cycle or double billing—a method that causes cardholders to pay interest on previously paid balances.

It is open to men and women (even teens). It is a method for taking the intimidation factor out of reading through the Bible. We will literally cut open a Bible and rebind it in 4 easy to handle sections! If you are not "crafty", we will also have sets already made in a variety of designs for you to purchase. Besides the actual hands-on work, we will briefly discuss the benefits of reading the Word cover-to-cover.

Republican District 12 Convention

The Republican District 12 Convention is scheduled to start at 7pm, March 5th, at the Delta Community Center, Delta Junction. With a teleconference hook-up meeting at Valdez Storage for those in the valdez area that don't want to make the drive. Individual teleconference is also available for those that need that option as well.


District Convention is open to all registered Republicans living in District 12. Please come and join us if you are interested in becoming a Delegate to the State Convention in April or just to learn how the process works.

Available Republican Candidates for Governor will hold a "Meet and Greet" just prior to the District Convention. At this time both Bill Walker and Ralph Samuels have said they plan to be there.

This "meet and Greet" will be open to all members of the community. Teleconference will begin at 6pm. with a time for speeches and question / answer.

Leadership Training in Fairbanks

Charities and Donors Should Seek Proof of Credibility

Anchorage, Alaska – Feb. 22, 2010 – Well-meaning "philanthropreneurs" collect donations before registering organization as a non-profit.

In an attempt to honor his late wife and her daughter, Simon Monjack and Sharon Murphy formed the Brittany Murphy Foundation as a charitable organization dedicated to arts education for children—a cause beloved by the recently deceased actress. Within weeks of her passing, an invitation to the foundation's memorial fundraiser was circulating and requesting "suggested donations" of up to $10,000.

Shortly thereafter, news leaked that the Brittany Murphy Foundation is not properly registered as a non-profit with the California Secretary of State's office or the Internal Revenue Service.

Charities and commercial fundraisers must comply with California state laws, register with the Attorney General's Office, and file financial disclosure reports. Those with gross revenue or assets in excess of $25,000 must file reports annually with the Attorney General's Registry of Charitable Trusts. Visit www.ag.ca.gov/charities for more details.

Though the fundraiser was abruptly canceled, some donations were collected. Now, brittanymurphyfoundation.org says it will return all donations and stop soliciting until the non-profit status is official.

• Check with the state Attorney General's office for information on forming a charity or not-for-profit organization.
• Get important tax guidelines for charities and not-for-profits from the IRS.
• Learn about BBB's Charity Review Program and how BBB evaluates organizations based on 20 Standards for Charity Accountability. Ask about BBB's Charity Seal Program, which helps the public easily identify legitimate charities.

For potential charity donors:

• In the wake of celebrity tragedies, be cautious when considering recently established organizations. Local charities should be registered with the Alaska Department of Law.
• Search the IRS database to verify tax information on organizations.

Alaska Weekly Gas Price Update

Alaska, AK, February 22- Average retail gasoline prices in Alaska have fallen 11.6 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.26/g today. This compares with the national average that has increased 3.5 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.65/g, according to gasoline price website AlaskaGasPrices.com.


Including the change in gas prices in Alaska during the past week, prices today are 80.3 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 37.5 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 6.9 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 75.4 cents per gallon higher than this day a year ago.

Delta Farm Forum Set for Saturday, February 27th

Make plans to attend the annual Delta Farm Forum held at the Delta High School small gymnasium on Saturday, February 27th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Speakers from around the state will present information on a variety of agricultural interest.

Our local FFA Chapter and 4-H group the DJ Saddletramps perform the duties of Master of Ceremony and assist with several aspects of the program. Ag-related businesses and special interest groups will set up in the hallway to provide information and answer questions during the forum. Come for fresh doughnuts from the IGA Food cache and hot coffee served during the morning session.

New to this year’s event, 4-H Agent Marla Louder with the Tanana District CES along with the DJ Saddletramps is hosting a 4-H round-up/open house to be held in the DHS large gym. Contact Dani Markham at 322-8367 or Marla at 474-2427

Our first speaker, Daniel Consenstien, the newly appointed State Executive Director for the USDA Farm Service Agency Alaska, will be delivering the “Welcome” address; followed by Bob VanVeldhuizen researcher with the UAF School of Natural Resource and Agricultural Science he will present on cereal grains for human consumption. Kathryn Idzorek, research technician with CES will enhance the above topic with the “flavor of barley flour”.

Following a short break, Tim Meyers from Bethel will present on “You Won’t Believe What I have Found”. Next on agenda; USDA Agricultural Research Science research entomologist Dennis Fielding will give an update on black grass bugs. Delta producer, Frank Borman will be the last speaker prior to the luncheon with information on his new wind machine and “powering through a frost”.

The potluck luncheon will begin around noon. Main meat dishes, scalloped potatoes, and rolls will be provided through donations.

Guests are asked to follow this schedule when choosing a dish:
A-F = Potatoes or Equivalent
G-L = Vegetables
M-R = Desserts - bakers are asked to consider bringing a rhubarb or Alaska berry dessert
S-Z = Salads

Please be sure to put your name on utensils or serving containers you want to keep. Otherwise, check with the extension office for items left behind after the forum.

During the luncheon break, individuals involved with the Diversified Livestock Association will have a cafeteria table reserved for their group to discuss topics for the meeting following the forum at the Trophy Lodge, contact Ruby Hollembaek at 895-4715.

A panel discussion will begin the afternoon session with County Executive Director, Lloyd Wilhelm, USDA Farm Service Agency; Delta District Conservationist, Catherine Hadley; Agricultural Extension Agent, Phil Kaspari, UAF/CES; and Agricultural Specialist, Meghan Lene, Salcha-Delta Soil and Water Conservation District will discuss Conservation Reserve Program management decisions. Marketing Assistant, Patricia O’Neil, with the Alaska Division of Agriculture will be next addressing the Divisions activities and updates.

Following a brief intermission the Salcha-Delta Soil and Water Conservation District Chairperson, Rex Wrigley, will be giving the district’s annual report; followed by the SDSWCD speech winner and cooperator of the year – to be announced.

There’s lots to do and things to see; so get out and join the crowd for the best potluck luncheon of the year while visiting with folks who travel near and far for the 2010 Delta Farm Forum on Saturday, February 27th. Come listen to the latest in agricultural developments and other topics of interest from around the state.

The Pioneers of Alaska is a fraternal organization that gathers and preserves the relics and early history of Alaska; deliberates earnestly and works unselfishly for the betterment of social, political and economic conditions in Alaska.

Pioneers of Alaska was one of many organizations formed in early territorial settling days for social purposes to keep alive the memories of early trail blazers.

Following the organization of Igloo No.1 on February 20, 1907 in Nome, Igloo No. 2 was formed on June 1907 in Candle, and Igloo No. 3 in St. Michael. the Igloos convened in Nome on August 4, 1908, to create the Grand Igloo of the Pioneers of Alaska.
The purpose of the Grand Igloo is to unite Alaska’s Pioneers in a permanent organization. The object, quoting the Constitution, is to “preserve the names of all of Alaska’s pioneers on its rolls; to collect and preserve the literature and incidents of Alaska’s history, and to promote the best interests of Alaska.”

This group was not the only of its kind in the North. Perhaps the first was the Sons of the Northwest established in Sitka in March 1887. The Sitka club remained local and did not spread to other communities.

Others that may be considered local in nature were the Order of the Alaska Moose, no connection to the Loyal Order of Moose, which originated in Valdez in 1899; the Alaska Pioneers of Kodiak; and the ’87 Pioneers Association of Juneau.

More widespread were the Yukon Order of Pioneers formed in Forty-Mile, Yukon Territory, Canada, in the 1930s. This group migrated to Alaska with the followers of gold strikes.

Perhaps the most widespread and unique organization was formed aboard the Steamship “City of Seattle” en route from Seattle to Skagway in February 1899. It was called the Arctic Brotherhood.

Because of the number of similar orders in Alaska and the Northwest, the Grand Igloo’s, adoption of the Latin phrase Ecce Nuvum Astrum, meaning “Behold the New Star,” for use on its logo is understandable.
Fairbanks Igloo No. 4 was granted a charter in 1909, joining the ever-expanding and growing organization of the Pioneers of Alaska.

There have been 35 Igloo charters conferred since the beginning, rising and falling with the population centers. Seventeen are active today.

Nome Auxiliary No. 1 was given the first auxiliary charter in 1912, since that time there have been nineteen Auxiliary charters of which seventeen are still active.
In 2007, the Auxiliaries were re-named Women’s Igloos and retained their Auxiliary numbers.

Fort Wainright Aircraft Fly to California

FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska, Feb. 17. – Army helicopters based here will depart Feb. 22-23 on a 2,977-mile trip to Fort Irwin, Calif., in preparation for an exercise at the Army’s National Training Center (NTC).


Four CH-47D Chinook helicopters are expected to travel four days from here to Barstow, Calif., with stops in the Canadian cities of Whitehorse and Fort Nelson, followed by stops in Helena, Mt, Hill Air Force Base, Utah, and Las Vegas.

The 16th Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB) is scheduled to fly five more UH-60 Blackhawks Feb. 23 to the NTC from Fort Lewis, where they are undergoing minor maintenance following their recent redeployment from Iraq.

The 16th CAB Blackhawks are expected to stop overnight in Redding, Calif., before completing their two-day trip to Barstow, Calif. The aviation brigade plans to ship its smaller OH-58D Kiowa helicopters to Fort Irwin via military air transport Feb. 27.

The 16th CAB will provide aviation support to the Fort Lewis, Wash.,-based 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, during the Stryker brigade’s month-long mission readiness training exercise at the NTC. The exercise begins in March.

“NTC trains the transformed Army by conducting force-on-force and live-fire training for ground and aviation brigades in a joint scenario across the spectrum of conflict,” according to the training center’s website.

Northrop Grumman Contribution to Support Missile Defense Workforce in Alaska

DELTA JUNCTION, Alaska, Oct. 30, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has contributed $35,000 to Partners for Progress in Delta, Inc., to further the educational nonprofit group's goal of helping to build and sustain Alaska's skilled workforce in electronics and computer systems technology, particularly to support nearby missile defense operations.

"We are excited about working with the Partners to reach both secondary and post-secondary adult students who might be interested in these skills. We will work together to help identify the career pathways that make it possible for individuals to be competitive for jobs in these fields."

Clay noted the importance of GMD "as a critical piece of the Ballistic Missile Defense System that protects our nation and its allies, our homes and our families from ballistic missile attacks from rogue nations. The intent of this donation is to provide the foundation for an effective educational training program that qualifies local individuals for weapon system jobs at Fort Greely."

Alaska Army National Guard Iron Dog

The first Iron Dog event started in 1984, in Big Lake following the Northern Route of the Historic Iditarod Trail to Nome. The event began as the “Iron Dog Iditarod”, but the name was quickly changed the next year to the “Gold Rush Classic”, in 1990 the race was recognized as the “Iron Dog Gold Rush Classic” for a decade until Tesoro Corporation became a title sponsor, thus recognizing today’s event as the Tesoro Iron Dog.
Today’s Iron Dog course length 1971 miles, starting in Big Lake to Nome and finishing in Fairbanks, making it the World’s longest snowmobile race. Participants must traverse in some of Alaska’s the most remote and rugged terrain while confronting some the harshest winter conditions. Survival skills are essential, making it the World’s toughest snowmobile race. All teams in race classes are a team of two persons and two snowmobiles for safety.

The Iron Dog offers a non-competitive recreational class giving adventure seekers an opportunity to travel 1100 miles on the Northern Route of Historic Iditarod Trail to Nome. These teams of two or more travel the same race trail as the Pro Class Teams.

Ash Wednesday

In the Western Christian calendar, Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs forty-six days (forty days not counting Sundays) before Easter. It is a moveable feast, falling on a different date each year because it is dependent on the date of Easter. It can occur as early as 4 February or as late as 10 March.

Ash Wednesday gets its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful as a sign of repentance. The ashes used are gathered after the Palm Crosses from the previous year's Palm Sunday are burned. In the liturgical practice of some churches, the ashes are mixed with the Oil of the Catechumens (one of the sacred oils used to anoint those about to be baptized), though some churches use ordinary oil. This paste is used by the minister who presides at the service to make the sign of the cross, first upon his or her own forehead and then on those of congregants. The minister recites the words: "Remember (O man) that you are dust, and to dust you shall return", or "Repent, and believe the Gospel."

On a sunny, 25 degree, windless day, the 2010 Quartz Lake, Festival of Lights ice fishing derby was held February 13th and was a success. Delta Christian Center sponsored this event. It included a bonfire and hotdogs, chips and sodas for a donation. There were cash prizes of $45 for first place, $25 for second and third place. David Fifeld of North Pole won first place with a rainbow trout weighing in at 2 lbs.13 oz, his son, Brett Fifeld won second place with a rainbow trout weighing in at 2 lbs. 8oz. Tim Clark of Delta Junction tied for third place with a beautiful arctic char also weighing in at 2 lbs. 8 oz. Thank you to all participants and helpers who made this day memorable and a complete success!

BBB Uncovers Problems with Peel, Inc.

Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington Consumers Face Hassles and Headaches Over Unwanted Credit Card Charges

Anchorage, Alaska – Feb. 11, 2010 – Consumers across the U.S. are filing complaints with Better Business Bureau against Peel, Inc. Operating under a variety of business names and Web sites, this internet-based marketing and distribution company sells a variety of products—ranging from coffee and tea to jewelry and posters—and BBB records reveal a pattern of billing, collection, refund and exchange issues.

In the last 3 years, BBB has processed 3,122 complaints concerning Peel, Inc. Complaints from Alaskans have been concerning billing and collection issues.

Complaints allege that Peel, Inc., located in Evanston, Illinois, is charging unauthorized fees for ordered merchandise. Some complainants subsequently discover unwanted membership costs and receive unordered goods, then accuse the company of not fully disclosing transaction fees upon purchase.
Since Peel, Inc. failed to resolve the underlying cause of its high volume of complaints and several remain unanswered, the company has an "F" rating with BBB. Click here to view BBB's Reliability Report.

The company has recently announced on its Web sites that it is no longer accepting orders. Web sites connected with Peel, Inc. include: shopdani.com, seattledirectcoffee.com, especiallyposters.com or posterpass.com and others.

· Be cautious of free trial offers. If submitting payment information for shipping and handling, failure to cancel trials before a deadline could result in unwanted monthly charges.
· Don't feel pressured. Legitimate offers won't expire in minutes. Comparison shop.
· Check out online retailers. Visit www.bbb.org before doing business.
· Read and understand all policies, stipulations or disclaimers. Beware of companies with vaguely-worded or contradictory information in their agreements. Inspect the return, refund and shipping policies. Pay close attention to time limits on returns and other restrictions. Examine the full screen and look for scroll menus, which may include additional terms and conditions. Prior to pressing 'submit,' make sure to un-check any boxes agreeing to unwanted offers. Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday is a term used in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia for the day preceding Ash Wednesday, the first day of the Christian season of fasting and prayer called Lent.


In England and many other countries, the festival was widely associated with the eating of rich foods made with eggs, sugar and butter, such as pancakes. It was often known simply as Pancake Day, originally because making such foods used up ingredients such as fat and eggs, whose consumption was traditionally restricted during fasting associated with Lent.

Honors students named at UAF

Fairbanks, Alaska—The University of Alaska Fairbanks has announced the students named to the deans' and chancellor's lists for the fall 2009 semester. The lists recognize students’ outstanding academic achievements.
Students receiving a 3.9 grade point average or higher are placed on the chancellor's list, while those receiving a grade point average of between 3.5 and 3.89 are named to the deans' list.

UAF is a Land, Sea and Space Grant institution with an enrollment of more than 9,000 students. Located 160 miles south of the Arctic Circle, UAF is the only doctoral-degree-granting institution in the state. Since it was founded in 1917, UAF has been internationally recognized for research relating to the Arctic and subarctic, in areas such as biology, geophysics, engineering, natural resources and global climate change.

Presidents' Day

Titled Washington's Birthday, the federal holiday was originally implemented by the Congress of the United States of America in 1880 for government offices in the District of Columbia (20 Stat. 277) and expanded in 1885 to include all federal offices (23 Stat. 516). As the first federal holiday to honor an American citizen, the holiday was celebrated on Washington's actual birthday, February 22. On January 1, 1971 the federal holiday was shifted to the third Monday in February by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. A draft of the Uniform Holidays Bill of 1968 would have renamed the holiday to Presidents' Day to honor both Washington and Lincoln, but this proposal failed in committee and the bill as voted on and signed into law on June 28, 1968 kept the name Washington's Birthday.

Gas Prices Updates

Alaska, AK, February 15- Average retail gasoline prices in Alaska moved just 0.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.40/g today. This compares with the national average that has fallen 2.9 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.62/g, according to gasoline price website AlaskaGasPrices.com.


Including the change in gas prices in Alaska during the past week, prices today are 100.0 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 5.9 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 11.9 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 67.6 cents per gallon higher than this day a year ago.

"Gasoline prices will begin to slowly rise across much of the country as colder than average weather results in rising oil demand as temperatures plummet in key areas that warm their homes using heating oil", says GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst, Patrick DeHaan. "However, gasoline prices in the Midwest will buck the trend as stockpiles swell in the Great Lakes area." He goes on to mention that stockpiles grew last week to the highest levels since March 2008 in that area, resulting in lower prices as supply greatly outpaces demand.

Cooperative Extension Service surveys Alaskan

Fairbanks, Alaska—The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service wants to hear from Alaskans as part of its long-range planning efforts.
Extension has posted a short survey online at www.uaf.edu/ces, and a paper version is available at district offices across the state. Responses are requested by March 15.

Extension director Fred Schlutt said that survey responses will help Extension develop the programming and services that Alaskans want. Schlutt said Extension will use survey results to focus its work in six broad areas, including health, energy, climate change, food security, economic development, and youth and families. The survey lists examples of programming in these areas.

Schlutt said he would like to hear both from Alaskans who have used Extension resources and those who have not.

“We want to hear from as many folks as possible,” he said.

Extension is a nationwide education network supported by a partnership between the U.S. Department of Agriculture and land grant universities such as the University of Alaska Fairbanks. It provides fact-based, practical information to Alaskans, ranging from energy conservation and gardening to biomass development and chicken farming. Its 4-H program reaches more than 13,000 Alaska youths every year.

Searching for the new Ms. Wheelchair Alaska, USA!

Applications are now being accepted for the title of Ms. Wheelchair Alaska, USA! The winner will represent Alaska in July, competing against 50 other state representatives, for the national title of Ms. Wheelchair USA. The Ms. Wheelchair USA program is dedicated to celebrating the abilities and successful accomplishments of women with disabilities.
This year, one representative will be selected from each state based on the judging of their official State Representative Application Package. Judging of the Official Contestant Application, Contestant Platform Statement, two recommendation letters, and an overall impression score will result in the state titleholder selections.

To qualify, contestants must be women, ages 18 and older by July 30, 2010. There is no “age limit” in this competition! Contestants must utilize a wheelchair as their main source of mobility however; this program DOES NOT exclude women who may be able to utilize their legs. Contestants must be residents or students in Alaska for at least two months, may be married, single, or divorced. Contestants may have children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, or no children.

The winner of the Ms. Alaska title will receive an official MWUSA crown, banner, and qualify for the live competition and show late July 2010 in Akron/Cleveland, Ohio. This nationally televised, competition promises exciting activities, family fun, friendly competitions, and is designed to showcase the successful stories of women who have overcome obstacles and are uniquely contributing to our society.

The state competition fee is $250. Contestants may pay the fee themselves, get donations from family and friends, or obtain sponsorships from area groups, business, etc. All supporters will be acknowledged in the national program book. The fee is to be submitted with the application package. Deadline to enter is March 15, 2010.

Aviation Company Returns

 FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska, - The returning flights for A Company, 1st Battalion, 52nd Aviation Regiment have changed due to availability of aircraft.


The two flights originally scheduled for this week have been shifted due to mission requirements of aircraft in theater.

The first flight carrying A Company Soldiers is currently expected to return to Fort Wainwright Friday, Feb. 12th after 10 p.m.

The second flight of Soldiers returning to Fort Wainwright from A Company is expected to arrive Tuesday, Feb. 16th after 11 p.m.

After landing at Ladd Army Air Field and in-processing at Fort Wainwright’s Hangar 1, the Soldiers will be bused to Hangar 6 to be reunited with their families.

Using cold climate building techniques with new homes can trim homeowners’ energy bills. Richard Seifert, Cooperative Extension’s Service energy and housing specialist, will offer two courses in Delta Junction aimed at lowering home energy costs and indoor air quality.

Seifert will offer his newly developed course, “Mold” from 1-4 p.m. Feb. 12 at the Delta Career Advancement Center, and his Cold Climate Homebuilding Techniques Workshop will run from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Feb. 13, also at the center. Both workshops are free.

Free H1N1 Flu Vaccine Clinic Feb 17

H1N1 Vaccinations are still available for all age groups. Delta Public Health will be holding a free H1N1 clinic at the Community Center from 3 to 6 pm on Wednesday, February 17th.

Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. It is recommended that children under 10 years of age have two H1N1 vaccinations, so if your child had the first dose already, now would be a good opportunity to get the booster dose.

Our Very own Librarian Joyce McCombs Injured While on Vacation

Joyce has been on vacation visting Arizona and Laughlin, Nevada.  Last Wednesday morning a man drove his car into the casino shortly after Joyce and her husband, Steve finished having breakfast.  She was thrown to the ground and the person standing next to her was killed instantly.  Joyce suffered a servere head laceration and is now recovering from other bruises and sprains.

Quartz Lake Ice Fishing Derby

The Delta Junction Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the Festival of Lights February 12 - 14.

Delta Christian Center is hosting one of their events, the ice fishing derby Saturday Feb. 13 at Quartz Lake.

There will be a warm up fire. Hotdogs cooked on the grill will be served on a donation basis with chips and soda pop and several cash prizes for biggest fish ($45, $25, and $25), to be given out at the end of the derby for the largest fish caught.


Registration is at the lake and is free. Time is from 10am to 2pm. You need to bring your own gear, ie. rods, lures, ice scoops, whatever you need for a successful catch. Holes can be cut for you if you don't have an auger.

If you want more information call 803-3343 after 5pm. Come and join us on the ice this Saturday.

The rarely seen Albino Moose is a beautiful sight that Mother Nature has kept fairly secret for years. The Albino are totally white with pink eyes. They don't blend in with the forest very well so they tend to be easy targets for predators. Albinism is due to various gene mutations that affect the production of normal pigmentation. Their pink nose is also a sign of being an albino. This is the same moose that made our photo of the day back in October. This photo was taken on February 5. Photo Courtesy Lisa Stossmeister

SOS searches for survivors of fallen service members

The Survivor Outreach Services program manager at Fort Richardson is searching for all survivors of fallen soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines within the state of Alaska to provide a full range of services to include long-term support and continued connection and communication with the Army.
SOS provides a standardized, multi-agency, decentralized approach to improving support for survivors of fallen service members in communities closest to where families live.

The program standardizes services for survivors and provides trained experts in benefits counseling, financial counseling, grief counseling and casualty assistance.

The SOS process also places emphasis on the service member’s responsibility to prepare, prior to deployment, for the possibility of death. This preparation involves the service member, the service member’s spouse, children and extended family.

SOS supports the service member and family readiness during and after the painful and devastating experience of the loss of a loved one. SOS provides support to Casualty Assistance Officers to ensure families receive the most current information on benefits and entitlements and have access to long-term outreach, face-to-face, individual and group financial, legal and emotional support.

Service delivery strategies include a variety of services such as Web-based accessibility, outreach, face-to-face and group services. Services are offered at stateside, overseas, and geographically dispersed locations.

Community Bonfire on Valentines Day

The Festival of Lights is coming up quickly.  There are many activities on the schedule. 

One of the events that will require your participation is the bonfire.  It will be across from Forestry in the area where they burn brush in the summer and fall.

You can help by hauling your brush, old boards, cardboard, pallets, anything that will burn.  Please do not bring household garbage or tires.  We need to get a huge pile to make the bonfire a success.

The bonfire will take place on Sunday, February 14 at 5pm.

Thank you for your help and support of the Festival of Lights events.  The schedule will be posted on Monday of the activities taking place.

"Huntin' For a Cure" to Kickoff Delta's Relay for Life

Relay for Life of Delta Junction Kickoff will be on February 13th, 10am to 4pm, at the Delta Community Center. The theme for this year is “Huntin’ For a Cure” which is sure to make this year’s Relay better than ever!
The Delta Junction community is encouraged to join the fight against cancer. At the Delta Community Center, there will be information regarding the American Cancer Society, information about joining or putting together a team, event sponsorship information, survivor sign-up, food, and more! Volunteering for Relay offers an opportunity to get involved in the community, make friends, and provides an opportunity to celebrate and honor survivors as well as to remember those who have lost their battle with cancer. But perhaps most importantly, Relay raises funds so that the American Cancer Society can continue to do research and find a cure. In short, Relay is a life-changing organization that helps us celebrate loved ones while working towards a future without cancer.

Happy Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day is an annual holiday celebrated on February 2 in the United States and Canada. According to folklore, if a groundhog emerging from its burrow on this day fails to see its shadow, it will leave the burrow, signifying that winter will soon end. If on the other hand, the groundhog sees its shadow, the groundhog will supposedly retreat into its burrow, and winter will continue for six more weeks. The holiday, which began as a Pennsylvania German custom in southeastern and central Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries, has its origins in ancient European weather lore, wherein a badger or sacred bear is the prognosticator as opposed to a groundhog.

The largest Groundhog Day celebration is held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where crowds as high as 40,000 have gathered to celebrate the holiday since at least 1886.

Letter to the Editor

Hi Everyone,

I am saddened to inform all of you that as of today I am no longer serving the Deltana Community Services Partnership non-profit in the capacity of Project Administrator. This change has come not of my choosing, but by extenuating circumstances beyond my control. Though I no longer am employed by Northwest Resource Associates to serve the Partnership in the Deltana area as facilitator and contact person, I am available to serve when needed. My contact info is below; please do not hesitate to call me if I can assist. It has been my pleasure to have been of service to the Partnership as administrator since July 2009. Thank you to each of you who made it a joy and for the support given.
Wednesday's 12noon Children's Services Workgroup meeting is canceled. I plan to remain the chair person as long as there is a Children's Workgroup. I would appreciate hearing especially from those in the workgroup. I am having to regroup my thoughts as you can well assume. Though we haven't accomplished much, I believe in what our vision and purpose has been and is.

I will continue to assist those in the area that are in need of their GED, so I can still be contacted at the 895-3234 (DCSP 0ffice)...just leave a message.

Now! On a personal note.

There is a an upside to this great disappointment! I can clean out a couple of closets and reorganize my craft/sewing/laundry room...whew! Most importantly, be available for my family and friends as well! I would love to remain at home writing and painting, and when called upon, make specialty occasion cakes (wedding birthday, anniversary...etc...). But being among the unemployed populous, I hope to find part-time employment.

Alaska Weekly Gas Price Update and Outlook

Alaska, AK, February 1- Average retail gasoline prices in Alaska have risen 6.0 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.50/g today. This compares with the national average that has fallen 2.1 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.67/g, according to gasoline price website AlaskaGasPrices.com.


Including the change in gas prices in Alaska during the past week, prices today are $1.06/g higher than the same day one year ago and are 3.7 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 2.7 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 81.5 cents per gallon higher than this day a year ago.

"Prices will slowly fall across much of the country as a stronger dollar and better than expected gains in gasoline inventories push oil prices lower", says GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst, Patrick DeHaan.

DeHaan says that motorists can expect to see lower prices at the pump through mid-February before rising in March and April as refiners complete work on their plants. He also notes the significant jump in prices compared to last year, saying "higher gasoline prices are making it hard for the economy to recover as many Americans are still jobless, looking for employment."
